The Boys in the Band is an upcoming American gay drama film directed by Joe Mantello, based on the 1968 play of the same name by Mart Crowley, who also wrote the screenplay alongside Ned Martel.[1] Crowley had previously adapted The Boys in the Band for a 1970 film version directed by William Friedkin[1] and starring the original 1968 Off-Broadway cast.[2] The 2020 film stars the full cast from the play's 2018 Broadway revival, including Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Matt Bomer, Andrew Rannells, Charlie Carver, Robin de Jesus, Brian Hutchison, Michael Benjamin Washington, and Tuc Watkins.[1] It is scheduled to be released on September 30, 2020 by Netflix.

Premise

A group of gay friends reunite to celebrate one of their birthdays. When the host's potentially closeted college roommate shows up uninvited, the evening is thrown into turmoil.

Cast

Production

On April 18, 2019, Ryan Murphy announced that the play The Boys in the Band would be adapted for Netflix, as part of his $300 million deal with the streaming platform.[3][4] Murphy had previously revived the play for Broadway in 2018 and confirmed the director of the revival, Joe Mantello, would direct the film.[5] David Stone and Ned Martel were announced as producers alongside Murphy.[5] It was also confirmed that the entire cast of the 2018 Broadway revival would reprise their roles for the film, making the film have a cast of entirely openly gay actors.[5][6]

Principal photography began in July 2019.[7][8]

Release

It is scheduled to be released on September 30, 2020.[9]
