On the morning of 26 September 2017, a Palestinian gunman opened fire at Israeli security guards at the entrance gate of Har Adar, an upscale, Jewish residential suburb of Jerusalem located in the West Bank.[1] Three Israeli security guards were killed and a fourth was injured. The gunman was shot dead by the remaining guards. The Israeli authorities described the attack as an 'act of terrorism'.[1]

Background

In 2017 there have been multiple violent incidents in Israel and the Israeli settlements. The most notable attacks were the January 7 truck attack, in which a Palestinian truck driver killed four Israeli soldiers and wounded 17 others. On 16 June 2017, three Palestinian attackers killed one Israeli policewoman and injured four other police officers. On July 14 2017, Three Palestinian gunmen killed killed two Israeli police officers in a shooting attack at the Temple Mount, resulting in the 2017 Temple Mount crisis. On 21 July 2017, A Palestinian killed three Israeli settlers in a stabbing spree that was motivated by the Temple Mount crisis. From 13 September 2015 to 6 August 2017, 55 people have been killed in Palestinian terrorist attacks. [2]

Attack

The attack took place as the gunman approached an entrance to Har Adar guarded by a border policeman and two civilian security guards. Border policeman Solomon Gavriyah (20,) was killed, as were civilian security guards Youssef Ottman, 25, of nearby Abu Ghosh and Or Arish, 25, a who lived in Har Adar. A fourth man, the head civilian security officer of Har Adar, was injured. The attacker was shot and killed.[3]

"Share this message on my profile to silence your conscience. You were a good wife and a merciful mother, whereas I was a poor husband in the way I treated you. I say this with intact faculties: what you see tomorrow has nothing to do with my wife, and I provide her with the fullness of her rights. I beg your forgiveness and ask you to raise our children."

Nimer Aljamal on Facebook[4]

Nimer Mahmoud Ahmad Jamal, a 37-year old man and a father of four, who was from the neighboring village of Beit Surik, was behind the attack. He held a license to work in Israeli settlements.[5] An initial inquiry into the attack uncovered Jamal suffered from severe personal and family issues, including domestic violence. His wife fled to Jordan several weeks ago, after reportedly physically assaulting by him, leaving him with the children.[4] Minutes before before carrying out the attack, Jamal sent his wife a message on Facebook Messenger, apologizing for what he was about to do, mourned her departure and said he had been a terrible husband to her.[6]

In another Facebook posting, also made just before the attack, Jamal said he "feared no one but Allah."[4][6]
