Alissa White-Gluz (/əˈlisə waɪt ɡlʌz/;[2] born July 31, 1985) is a Canadian vocalist, best known as lead vocalist of the Swedish melodic death metal band Arch Enemy,[3] and former lead vocalist and founding member of the Canadian metal band The Agonist.[4]

Her vocal style includes both growling and clean vocals (singing).[5] Although primarily associated with melodic death metal, she has appeared as a guest vocalist for power metal and symphonic metal bands, notably Kamelot and Delain, and has performed live with Nightwish.

Career

The Agonist (2004−2014)

In 2004, White-Gluz formed The Agonist with fellow band members Danny Marino and Chris Kells in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.[6]

Arch Enemy (2014−present)

On March 17, 2014, Arch Enemy announced via press release that Alissa would be replacing their former vocalist Angela Gossow.[7]

White-Gluz released a statement on her Facebook page saying that she had left The Agonist, and that Vicky Psarakis had taken over as vocalist. "[I]t is with great sadness that I must also announce that The Agonist as you have come to know it is now a thing of the past. I had every intention of (and had even started) writing and recording yet another killer album this year, but my former band-mates decided to choose a different path. I wish I could change the situation but the unfortunate decision was made beyond my control so I can only wish them the very best of luck now that our time working together has concluded."[8]

In August 2015, White-Gluz revealed in an interview that the other members of the Agonist had in fact kicked her out of the band, and forcibly cut her off from anything to do with the group. She said,

"Little did I know that during that [during White-Gluz' European tour with The Agonist], The Agonist were lying to my face and they were actually going behind my back trying to find someone to replace me. They waited through an entire European tour with me, through local shows until the last show we had booked in 2013 which was I think December 7th. We played that show and the next day they all came to my house and basically kicked me out of the band, spit in my face, locked me out of my emails – what a big fucking mess. For the next week I was in total panic mode trying to regain access to my accounts and in total shock that the band I had built for ten years – for more than a 3rd of my life at that point – was now stolen from me. That was the hardest thing about this whole transition. It wasn’t hard to join Arch Enemy, it wasn’t hard to keep it a secret. It was totally professional and smooth on the side of Arch Enemy, unfortunately on the other side of the things it wasn’t and that was a very difficult situation for me, which I’m still coping with actually."[9]

White-Gluz gave another interview in 2017 where she detailed the circumstances of her departure and how she considered it the "biggest betrayal" she'd ever felt in her life.[10]

Guest vocal work

White-Gluz has also recorded guest vocals for Slaves on Dope's CD Over the Influence as well as for Blackguard's EP, Another Round.[11][12]

Kamelot

White-Gluz has worked with Kamelot on a number of occasions. In September and October 2012, she was a guest vocalist for Kamelot when they were the supporting act for Nightwish's North American tour. [13]

In February 2015, it was also announced that she would contribute guest vocals to Kamelot's album, Haven.[14]

In 2017 it was announced that White-Gluz's first solo album would feature collaborations with Kamelot members.[15]

Nightwish

At the Denver show on September 28th, 2012, White-Gluz and Elize Ryd performed the Nightwish lead vocals live on stage with minimal preparation after Anette Olzon was taken ill.[16][17]

White-Gluz, Ryd and Tommy Karevik later joined Nightwish (now fronted by Floor Jansen) on stage again to sing the final song of the tour, Last Ride of the Day, in Orlando on October 14th, 2012.[18]

Arch Enemy, with White-Gluz as lead vocalist, joined Nightwish as a supporting act on their 2015 European tour.[19]

Delain

In February 2014, the Dutch symphonic metal band Delain announced that White-Gluz would be contributing guest vocals to their fourth studio album The Human Contradiction.[20]

White-Gluz made a second guest appearance with Delain in 2016 on "Hands of Gold", the opening track of their fifth studio album Moonbathers.[21]

White-Gluz has been selected multiple times as one of "the hottest chicks in metal" by Revolver.[23][24]

In 2006, White-Gluz appeared on Canadian Idol singing a cover of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody and received significant screen time.[25] In January 2012, White-Gluz was featured as a coach on an episode of MTV's Made.[26]

White-Gluz is appearing in visual companion content to American Murder Song as Pretty Lavinia.[27] Her character was first revealed at Steampunk World's Fair and has since been released on American Murder Song's YouTube channel.

Activism

As an animal rights activist, Alissa received a Libby award from PETA for her work in an international campaign advocating against the hunting of Canadian seals.[28][29]

Personal Life

White-Gluz has been a vegan since 1998.[30][31] She follows a straight edge lifestyle.[32][33] In February 2014, Alissa started dating Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein of The Misfits
