The American Muslims for Palestine (AMP) is a US nonprofit organization founded in 2006 with the declared goal of educating American public on Palestine's culture. [1] According to critics, EMP uses education as a cover for promoting anti-Semitism[2]. AMP holds conferences and training sessions for coalition building and legislative advocacy.[3] The organization hosts annual Palestine Advocacy Days, that provide workshop panels and encourage attendees to meet with elected officials at Congress.[4] AMP works with Jewish Voice for Peace to bolster Palestine solidarity campaigns.[5]

A national board member of AMP was prevented entry to Israel as part of an interfaith delegation in 2017.[6] In 2018, Israel officially barred members of AMP from entering Israel due to AMP's support of Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions.[7][8]

Campaigns

AMP co-signed a letter with Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) in 2012 calling on the University of California system to protect student civil liberties from efforts to censor Palestine-related activism.[9]

AMP has organized several billboard and bus advertisement campaigns to end United State's foreign aid to Israel, including New York City and Washington DC.[10] In summer 2014, it organized protests against Israel's offensive against Gaza Strip. In 2015, it ran a bus advertisement campaign in advance of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech to a joint session of Congress which called on members of Congress to boycott the speech.[11]

In 2017, Jewish Voice for Peace, US Campaign for Palestinian Rights, Code Pink, and AMP organized a letter campaign signed by 32 Democratic congressman urging United States Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to assist Palestinian protester Issa Amro from criminal charges in Israel.[12]

Criticism

The organization's advocacy for Palestinians' right of return and for the One-state solution would mean for most Jews the end of Israel as a Jewish state[13]. The organization is also accused of rising out from Muslim Brotherhood in the United States and having an Islamist view on the Israeli–Palestinian peace process.[14] Asaf Romirowsky, a Middle East historian, described the organization as "racist and eliminationist".[14] Terrorist finance expert Jonathan Schanzer in his testimony to United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations has said that "...at least seven individuals who work for or on behalf of AMP have worked for or on behalf of organizations previously shut down or held civilly liable in the United States for providing financial support to Hamas: the Holy Land Foundation, the Islamic Association for Palestine, and KindHearts....".[15] According to the Anti-Defamation League website "...AMP promotes extreme anti-Israel views and has at times provided a platform for anti-Semitism under the guise of educating Americans about “the just cause of Palestine and the rights of self-determination.”"[16]
