Bailando por un sueño (literally "Dancing for a dream") is a segment inside the Argentine television program Showmatch, broadcast on channel 13. The show has no connection whatsoever to the British TV series Strictly Come Dancing, which is distributed by BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the BBC.

On the contest, a non-celebrity "dreamer" (man or woman) who in addition must be an amateur dancer, is accompanied by an Argentine celebrity in dance routines, in which they have to demonstrate their skills in various styles such as: Tango, Chacarera, Salsa, Merengue, Flamenco, Rock, Disco, Hip-Hop, Axé, Charleston and most recently Pole-Dancing, Strip-Dancing and Adagio. The couples are awarded points by a panel of judges and those with the fewer points have to face the public vote to continue in the program.

As of June 2007, the show is in its fourth season and the panel of judges continues to include icons of the Argentine entertainment scene like: Reina Reech, Moria Casán, Gerardo Sofovich and Jorge Lafauci.

Showmatch, hosted by Marcelo Tinelli, also features another contest of similar characteristics: Singing for a dream or Cantando por un sueño. Both segments have received consistently high ratings and lead their time slots in Argentine TV.

From the second season onwards, and unlike the international versions, Dancing for a dream (Argentina) has taken a controversial turn due to the constant bickering that often escalates to verbal bashing and personal attacks between the celebrities and the judges. This could be behind the high ratings of the show.[1][2]

Judge Jorge Lafauci

Judge Jorge Lafauci is as of the fifth season of the show, the only judge present in all the seasons. He is well-known for being the most demanding judge; arguing that Julio Bocca's dancing style (an Argentine dancer of high reputation) deserves a 10, his usual highest score has always been a 7 (considered as a 10 by the contestants, and even by the rest of the jury), and his lowest score has been a 1, which made him one of the few judges to put this mark (the other being Moria Casán). He has only awarded 9 to one dance: contestants Laura Fidalgo and Miguel Brandán's Latin Adagio.

He awarded 8 to various dances:
Third Season

  • Contestants Laura Fidalgo and Gustavo Rojas' Swing.

Fourth Season

Fifth Season

  • Contestants Laura Fidalgo and Miguel Brandán's Adagio.
  • Contestants Laura Fidalgo and Miguel Brandán's Music video dance routine (Madonna's Fever).
  • Contestants Valeria Archimaut and Juan Leandro Nimo's Pole dance routine.
  • Contestants Valeria Archimaut and Juan Leandro Nimo's Jive routine.
  • Contestants Laura Fidalgo and Miguel Brandán's National Rock also earned them an 8 from Jorge Lafauci

  • ^1 Miss Pradón had quit the contest on 6 October 2006 on account of health concerns, but agreed to return when she partnered Mr. Avoletta on the elimination round three days later. In the end, after an argument with the panel of judges over her stance in the competition, she left the program before it was revealed that she and Mr. Avoletta had been eliminated by the viewers' vote.

In this third season, the panel of judges was presided until 23 November 2006 by entrepreneur and TV producer/host Gerardo Sofovich, alongside journalist Jorge Lafauci, actress and dancer Moria Casán, and actress and dancer Reina Reech. On Tuesday, 21 November, Mr. Sofovich announced that he would be resigning his post as the panel of judges’ president on account of what he felt were “some participants’ insolence and lack of respect for the judges”, and his vexation at the quarrels that had involved him (first with celebrity Laura Fidalgo, with whom he had already had an altercation before the contest, then with Javier Rojas, and lastly with the recently evicted Eduardo Garro). Although the show's host and producer (and Mr. Sofovich's personal friend) Marcelo Tinelli entreated with him to stay, his production stated that his replacements will rotate weekly for the remainder of the show.[3] For the week of November 27, former football star Diego Maradona (who had competed in the Italian Ballando con le Stelle in 2005) took over Gerardo Sofovich's seat in the panel of judges.[4]

However, Maradona's appearance lasted only one week. He was replaced with Florencia de la V (winner of the second edition of the show) for the rest of the show's run, but Moria Casán took over the juror's presidency.

Judges

Sofovich's replacements

After Sofovich's resignation, the following well-known people in Argentina, took over Sofovich's place, although Moria Casán was renamed as the panel of judges' new President.

However, when Samuel Gelblung was judge, Sofovich came back and both of them were part of the panel of judges (only in finals).

  • ^2 Rodrigo "La Hiena" Barrios left the competition, and José María Listortti entered in his place.
  • ^3 Rocio Guirao Diaz left the competition, in a very questionable way, when even when she was one of the best dancers and one of the most popular contestant, she was evicted by Matías Alé, who was, indeed, one of the less supported ones, the day that her (Guirao's) dancer announced that he was leaving the show because his dream was accomplished.
  • ^4 Catherine Fulop left the competition, and Cinthia Fernandez entered in her place.

* On August 15, 2007, some of the original contestants or another replacements partnered by their respectives dancers participated in a repechaje. From the eleven couples, only seven had the score required by the judges to pass to the next step: the four most voted couples, returns to the competition. On August 13, it was revealed the returning couples were going to be five: Anabel Cherubito (replacing Soledad Fandiño) partnered by Lucas Álvarez Márquez, Claudia Fernández (replacing Iliana Calabró) partnered by Maximiliano D'Iorio, Flavia Palmiero partenered by Exequiel López, María Eugenia Ritó (replacing Juana Repetto) partnered by Esteban Hernández and Silvia Sûller (replacing Carmen Barbieri) partnered by Leandro Ángelo.
