"Down" is the American-debut single by British R&B star Jay Sean, from his American-debut album (third studio album in total) All or Nothing. The single features American mega rapper and label mate Lil Wayne, and began to be played on radio stations across the U.S. from May 31, 2009. The single was officially released on iTunes on June 30, 2009 in USA and Canada, and has since reached the Top 5 at the Billlboard Hot 100 Chart, peaking at number two on week date September 1, 2009.^[1]

It is co-producted by Cash Money Records CEO's Baby & Slim. The single was released on iTunes in Belgium, France, Sweden and New Zealand for digital download. On September 10, 2009 was the single added to radio stations across the U.K., and will be released for digital download via iTunes on October 26, 2009.^[2]

History

On October 15, 2008 at the MOBO Awards, Jay Sean announced that he had signed with the American Hip-Hop record label Cash Money Records. Jay explained “It’s always been a dream for me to sign to an American label. And it’s great to be accepted by the best in the game.”^[3]

It was rumoured that his first single in the US would be a remix of the single, "Tonight" featuring Lil Wayne. In fact, a remix hadn't been produced but the song "Down" which was originally recorded in 2008, featured a new verse by the rapper.

"The news was on, everything was depressing and we were like 'look at this man -- everything's so down in the dumps. Why don't we write a song to take everyone's mind away from being down?" explains Sean about how the track came about during a late night recording session in Miami's Hit Factory studio. According to Sean, "Wayne heard it, fell in love and dropped a verse on it," which resulted in the up-tempo summer record peppered with Wayne's gritty pipes.^[4]

Music video

The music video was produced alongside the video for "Written On Her".

The video was first shot in London, Buckinghamshire on 24th April 2009 with Cash Money crew without Lil Wayne, the video was shot over two days. The Buckinghamshire mansion featured is Hedsor House, an enormous private mansion and park where Mark Ronson hosted his 33rd birthday and the place where The Golden Compass was filmed.^[5] The video was finally completed in Miami, with Jay heading to the U.S. to finish the video with Lil Wayne on 30th April 2009.^[6]^[7] On 23rd July 2009 the video was Official premiered on Jay's Official Youtube page.^[8] The video was added to MTV's rotation on 5 August, 2009 include MTV Hits and MTV America.

Birdman, Chipmunk, Ghetts and Tinie Tempah make an appearance in the video. The video also features a lead girl, mansion, dancers and bottles. The video was produced by Shurwin Beckford and directed by Richard Pengelley for Jayded Entertainment/Guerilla Hype/Hey Buddy and edited by Jamie Mac and Adam Wood.

"Down" was also the #1 most viewed music video on YouTube on the planet the first week, and have over 2,500,000 views.

During the week of August 10, 2009, the music video was featured as iTunes' Free Music Video of the Week.

Critical reception

"Down" has received generally favorable review from critic. Ginger Clements from The Billboard said "Jay Sean brings his internationally successful blend of pop stateside with the debut single from "My Own Way," the singer's first U.S. album set for an Oct. 13 release. The Londonie's melodic vocals, which helped his 2004 album go five times platinum in India, resonate with impressive tonal clarity. "Baby are you down, down, down, down, down?" he wonders on the chorus, the last word cascading into Auto-Tune bliss. Cash Money labelmate Lil Wayne lends his crackling voice and metaphoric prowess to the song's closing verse, dishing up playful, timely lines like, "Don't you ever leave the side of me/Definitely, not progbably/And honestly, I'm down like the economy." Thanks to a triumphant, synth-laden beat and memorable hook, "Down" is gaining ground on the Billboard Hot 100, and Jay Sean likewise seems poised to break stateside".^[9]

Chart performance

The single has achieved Platinum status by selling over 1 million copies in the United States, and has so far been his most success single in the U.S. and in his carrer.^[10]
"Down" debut at #72 at the week of August 4, 2009 and after nine weeks, the song peaked at #2 on the week of September 1, 2009 on the Billboard Hot 100.

On Canadian Hot 100 did the song debut at #40 at the week of 18 August, 2009 and has after fire weeks, peaked at #18 on the week of 8 September, 2009.

On Recording Industry Association of New Zealand debut "Down" at 18 and on the second week has it peaked at #9 so far. On Sverigetopplistan has "Down" debut at #52 and on the second week has it peaked at #29 so far.
