Edward Lucas (born 1962) is a British journalist.

Lucas works for The Economist, the London-based global newsweekly. He has been covering eastern Europe since 1986, and was the Moscow bureau chief from 1998-2002. He is now the central and east European correspondent.[1]

He was educated at Winchester College, the London School of Economics and the Jagiellonian University in Cracow. He has contributed to several books, including "Why I am still an Anglican" (Continuum 2006). His father is the Oxford philosopher John Lucas, and he is married to the columnist Cristina Odone.

Edward Lucas's latest book, "The New Cold War", has been published in eleven countries. [2] It has received praise from, amongst others, Vladimir Bukovsky, Mart Laar and KGB defector Oleg Gordievsky, but has also been criticized by John Laughland and Alexander Zaitchik for what they argue is biased, selective and one-sided reporting about Russian politics.[3] [4]

Lucas has denied being a Russophobe. However, his personal website links to La Russophobe, an openly racist hate site that apparently mocked the deaths of Russian victims of a recent plane crash and published an obituary to Soviet dissident Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn under the title of "Good riddance". Some bloggers have speculated that Lucas is actually the author of this site, as their writing styles are very similar.[1] The author of La Russophobe states that the site was inspired by Edward Lucas's work. Lucas's writing is heavily featured and cited in the website.[2]

On 8 October 2008 in an article in the Financial Times he called for various financial measures to be taken against Russia and opined that these must be implemented soon as "it will not be too long before financial centres such as Dubai, Shanghai and Mumbai are competing so effectively with London that clients that we find too dodgy will go elsewhere. What our financial centres sell, above all, is respectability. We have priced it too cheaply in the past few years. It is time to be choosier, while we still have some left in stock."[5]
