:I wondered the same thing. Given the first few paragraphs, we'd probably consider him an Indian-American. Given the era and place in which he lived, I can see how he might have identified with African-Americans, but that isn't explained in the article. I'm intrigued. And was he close to his father, the 3rd US Vice-President? Can anyone shed more light on this biography?
