On hold - sunderland

Sorry peter... I haven't got the GA on hold template to work... it is. User:Itfc+canes=me Talk Contributions 17:43, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

DYK?

Why did you add a DYK tag to my talk page, then take it away? The edit summary wasn't very illuminating. Sabine's Sunbird talk 21:37, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

Sorry, I just looked at the difs, and didn't realise that I'd been tagged twice. My bad, not yours. Sabine's Sunbird talk 21:46, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

The source for an image

Hi Peter, might you remember the source for Image:VictoriaPrincessRoyal.jpg? From which book or publication was it scanned? Thank you. Jappalang (talk) 09:25, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

Thank you, Peter! Jappalang (talk) 21:20, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

Anne of Świdnica

I would like to mention that the original name of the article was Anne of Świdnica which has almost 3 times as much results on Google (on English pages only) than the German one. Anna of Swidnica is really not the main proposition of mine in this dispute.

See for yourself:

  • "Anne of Swidnica" has 229 results on English only pages look here
  • "Anne of Świdnica" has 164 results on English only pages look here
  • "Anna von Schweidnitz" has only 79 results on English only pages look here
  • "Anna of Schweidnitz" has only 53 results on English only pages look here

- on (not) quoting an Amazon customer review. I've merely linked to it. — Martha (talk) 20:15, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

P.S. Turns out I have a related question: What about "a short review of her book from the Psychiatric Quarterly, 31.1 (January, 1957)"? Since that's in a published journal, is THAT citeable? Thanks in advance — Martha (talk) 20:32, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

Help issue

Peter, I would very much appreciate if you would follow up on your recent comments at my talkpage in this thread - I do not want to provoke any further drama by restoring the {{helpme}} tag, but I have still not received the help I requested, the explanation and conduct of those who responded was not at all illuminating. Sincerely, the skomorokh 15:17, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

You've clarified matters nicely. I think it would be helpful to respond to other good faith help requests in future in a similar tone if not at a similar length. Thanks again, and regards, the skomorokh 15:36, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

Just a note to say Thank You

Hello Peter, I just wanted to take a second to say "Thank-You" for your quick reply to my question of help. (about live chat, and sources on User page. I appreciate you quick reply, and wanted to make sure you knew it didn't go unnoticed. Thank You again.

Kind Regard, Ched --Ched Davis (talk) 16:53, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

You are most welcome. :) PeterSymonds (talk) 17:08, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

NOT canvassing!

Please re-read my post. I'm not asking for anyone to vote "my way". I'm asking for suggestions on how to deal with blatant disregard for policy on a continuing basis in Afds. Quite a different case. I'd appreciate having my question re-adding. --Kickstart70TC 17:37, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

Fair enough. I'll formulate my thoughts further. I do feel a little slighted being accused of canvassing. I've been an editor here for a very long time and know the rules (and follow them). --Kickstart70TC 17:42, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

Alan and Morris Wikipedia

why did you deleat it?

i wasnt finished.....the least you could have done was help me add on to it —Preceding unsigned comment added by Grantsaylor1995 (talkcontribs) 19:15, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

Hey Grantsaylor1995. I'm sorry, but I don't remember that particular page (I am no longer an admin, so can't access your deleted material). If you believe I deleted this article unfairly or unjustly, you can request a review at deletion review. That will give editors a chance to endorse or overturn my decision. Further, if you want help with a future article, you're more than welcome to ask. :) Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 11:00, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
That particular article was deleted by Peter and then three other admins variously under our guidelines covering nonsense, lack of context and lack of notability. I'm suprised it has not been salted. Please do not recreate the page again until you have read and understood the helpful information on creating an artcile here. Pedro :  Chat  11:13, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Mpiri - nominated for deletion

Hi PeterSymonds I did the page on Mpiri, and I would like to explain myself on order to prevent future nominations like the one I received. However, the discussion page has now been closed, so I am not sure where to write my comments. Can you help me?

Hi there Bogi. Yep, I closed the deletion discussion as "no consensus", which means that there weren't enough comments in favour of either deleting or keeping (this defaults to the article being kept). You can explain further comments on the article's talk page, or simply putting as many reliable, verifiable and independent sources on the article page. When an editor sees that an article has some good sources, they are less likely to nominate it, because the content is highly likely to be encyclopedic and notable. I hope this helps. Despolier of my page

Making me write notes!. When are you going to ask for the tools back? Obviously it will need to be via RFA (I believe that was the outcome). Pedro :  Chat  13:25, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Yes, well, I am (of course) particularly sorry to let you (and Balloonman) down. Yes, it will need to be via RfA, but as for when, I don't know. There's one primary issue that I've considered, trust, and another secondary issue, drama that may be caused by running again. While that regrettable incident will not happen again, I can't tell at what point the community will trust me once again. There will be some that currently do, and some that probably never will, but in terms of general agreement for a resysop, I don't think I can judge. One day, maybe. :) Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 19:32, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
You didn't let anyone down - you made a silly error of judgement and you rightly lost the bit. However Wikipedia only benefitted from you having +sysop. I think you should request the tools again. If it turns into a drama fest just withdraw, quickly. I don't actually think it would do. I'm more than willing to renominate, because I believe you've "learnt your lesson" (horrible phrase) and more importantly it would be a positive move for the project. If you want to go to RFA just ask me and we can go from there. Pedro :  Chat  22:46, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
This is true. Peter was an excellent admin. But he should think this over very carefully. He left to avoid (requesting a desysop before it hit ANI) drama, and this is more noble in my opinion to staying and causing a big scene. I think he should stand before the community once again, and reconfirm his adminship here. Synergy 23:06, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
Thank you, Pedro, for the offer, and Synergy for your kind words. I'll have a careful think about it and let you know. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 16:46, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

RfA thanks

The RfA Barnstar
PeterSymonds, I would like to thank you for your participation in my recent Request for Adminship, which passed with 112 supports, 4 opposes and 5 neutrals. A special mention goes out to Stwalkerster and Pedro for nominating me, thanks a lot for having trust in me! In response to the neutrals, I will try to double check articles that have been tagged for speedy deletion before I CSD them and will start off slowly with the drama boards of ANI and AN to ensure that I get used to them. In response to the oppose !votes on my RfA, I will check that any images I use meet the non-free content criteria and will attempt to handle any disputes or queries as well as I can. If you need my help at all, feel free to simply ask at my talk page and I'll see if I can help. Once again, thank you for your participation, and have a great day! :) The Helpful One 22:07, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Help Desk

I was just wondering why you deleted my request for help at the help desk. Thanks, 99.240.224.232 (talk) 18:29, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

It is because you created the vandalism in the first place. Therefore there was little reason to keep it. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 18:32, 29 November 2008 (UTC)
I know that I just got really bored. Lol. COngratulations on your fast response time! 99.240.224.232 (talk) 18:42, 29 November 2008 (UTC)
Thank you, but you could use your time more constructively. I hope you create an account and work on some articles in the future, bearing in mind Wikipedia:Five pillars and Wikipedia:Tutorial! Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 18:58, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

Rules I need to know

I would like to know what is counted as vandalism, point of view and article writing & content.

Thank you. CommanderBuzzer (talk) 13:32, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

Okay, well, in the order you state:
  • Vandalism is the deliberate attempt to deface or damage the content on Wikipedia. As far as rules go, it is not allowed, and is reverted on sight. Vandalism will result in the user being warned, and in the cases of continual vandalism, blocked.
  • A point of view when discussing an article can be an element of bias, and is generally not allowed. Examples include "Mahatma Gandhi was the greatest Indian who ever lived", which is not a neutral point of view unless it's backed up by reliable, verifiable and independent sources. Such a statement cannot be backed up as it is very subjective. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and should report facts and conform to neutrality.
  • Article writing on Wikipedia must conform to several guidelines. Firstly, the article must be notable and encyclopedic. An example about Elizabeth II is obviously notable and encyclopedic, but an article about my local bus stop is very unlikely to be. Biographies of living persons must not contain any dubious content or controversial claims without the sources mentioned above; the content can be removed or, in extreme cases, deleted. Articles which do not establish notability (usually established through verifiable and reliable sources listed above), or unencyclopedic content, may be deleted, either by speedy deletion, proposed deletion or articles for deletion. When discussing an article's content, and you may propose some additions, remember that consensus can never overrule verifiability. External links can also be removed if they are inappropriate.
  • Content in general is any part of the encyclopedia, in the different namespaces. There are rules that govern what you cannot have on your userpage; what is appropriate and inappropriate to have in your userspace, or another namespace such as the Wikipedia namespace. Advertising, vandalism, attack pages and copyright violations are instantly deleted or significantly trimmed.

I hope that helps. If you have further questions, feel free to ask. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 13:50, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

Thank You very much. I will do my best to do follow these rules. Thanks again, Signed: CommanderBuzzer (talk) 13:57, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

Great. :) I hope you enjoy your time here, and drop me a note if you require assistance in the future. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 14:00, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
