Template:Japan article

Welcome to WikiProject Anime and manga, a WikiProject that aims to improve anime and manga related articles by normalizing the standards for, and expanding Wikipedia's coverage of, such articles.

If you would like to participate, you can simply start by editing any anime or manga article, or join the project below and/or contribute to the discussion on the talk page.

If you find, create, or contribute to an anime or manga article, please paste {{WikiProject Anime and manga}} ({{anime}} or {{manga}} for short) onto the article's talk page.

If you find a stub article that has not yet been marked as a stub, add {{anime-stub}} (or {{manga-stub}} for manga articles) to the bottom of the article. It will automatically be included in the anime and manga stubs category, where you can find plenty of stub articles to expand if you are itching to do something.

The current Anime and Manga Collaboration of the Week is inactive.
The next candidate will be selected on TBA.
Last week's article was TBA.

Article structure

  1. Please follow the guidelines on Japan-related Manual of Style.
  2. Always make redirects for alternate names and titles, especially if the title uses macrōns.

Shows, movies, and manga

This is still very preliminary; if you have issues with it, change it.

In general, follow the form given on Wikipedia:WikiProject Television or Wikipedia:WikiProject Movies (the television project's form seems to work well for manga/any episodic story also). Keep the articles for manga and anime together if they tell a contiguous or connected story and do not make the article too large.

Article name

If several articles share the same name then use the Wikipedia page naming conventions. The word or phrase in parentheses should be: The generic class that includes the topic. For example:

  • Anime related - title (anime)
  • Manga related - title (manga)
  • Game related - title (game)
  • Live action/drama/tokusatsu - title (TV series)

For further disambiguation between anime television series, OVAs and movies the subject or context to which the topic applies should be used, for example:

  • Television series - title (TV series)
  • OVA - title (OVA)
  • movie - title the Movie

Example of pages that illustrate disambiguation:

Sections

  1. The article introduction should describe the anime or manga, its author or creator, and basic plot information. (If someone asked you what the anime was about, what would you tell them?) As always, keep the recommendations of Wikipedia:Lead section in mind, and avoid spoilers.
  2. Typically, the next section is a plot summary. In practice, this covers at least the beginning of an series or film. Full plot summaries can be divided into subpages if needed, but a brief summary should remain in the main article.
  3. The plot summary is followed by a listing of the main characters, with basic character descriptions and voice actor credits (if applicable; see {{anime voices}}). Character names should always be in bold and generally should not be divided into sub-sections as this makes the Table of Contents unnecessarily long. Minor characters are optional, but article length should be considered. If the majority of characters descriptions consist of one or two sentences, a bullet list is most appropriate; but if the majority of characters descriptions consist of one or more paragraphs, then a definition list is preferred. If the list of characters is a separate page (see Characters, below), headings should be used.
  4. Lists of episode titles, manga volumes, voice actors, theme songs, etc., should be placed towards the end of the article. If these lists take up a large amount of space, consider moving them to a separate page titled List of (series) media. Other list-type information (such as soundtracks that do not merit individual articles) should also be placed on this page. For an example implementation see Cowboy Bebop and List of Cowboy Bebop media.

Articles should be self-contained, only referring to subpages for additional information or details. Readers should be able to obtain all basic information about an anime or manga by only reading the main article.

Infobox animanga

If the information does not already exist, an infobox can be added to an article. Please see {{Infobox animanga}} for instructions and usage.

Flag icons
Often, flag icons are used inside {{Infobox animanga}} to help distinguish between companies in different countries. This can be easily accomplished by using the template {{flagicon|CountryName}}. A list of commonly used country flags include:
  • Japan {{flagicon|Japan}}
  • United States {{flagicon|United States}}
  • Canada {{flagicon|Canada}}
  • South Korea {{flagicon|South Korea}}
  • Germany {{flagicon|Germany}}

Characters

Character's names should be listed in western order. (GN-SN) Follow the rules at WP:MOS-JA.

Keep any information about characters and seiyū together as opposed to creating separate seiyū sections.

Don't be afraid to create a separate page for characters if the section on the article grows large, but separate articles for each character should be avoided unless the character is very popular or notable. Name this page List of characters in (series) if it is just a list, or Characters in (series) if it contains actual information on the characters. Characters should be called what the series officially states their romaji names as. If that does not exist, use what they are named in the most recent or popular English translation, if it exists, isn't egregiously bad, and is the generally-used name (a google test is appropriate here). Otherwise, use a literal transliteration.

People

For articles on seiyū (voice actors), animators, directors, etc., follow Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography. Make sure to specify:

  • Name in Kanji and literal transliteration if different from the usual English name.
  • Year of birth (and death if applicable)
  • Notable works he/she was involved in
  • Impact/influence (if any)

Use the form of the name in English that the person personally uses (e.g. Yoshitoshi ABe, not Abe Yoshitoshi), or if that is unknown, the form it is most often translated as. See also Wikipedia:Manual of Style (Japan-related articles)#Person names and Japanese name#Japanese names in English.

Use a neutral term such as Voiced by to refer to people who perform voice acting.

Companies and organizations

See Wikipedia:Companies, corporations and economic information for basic guidelines. Also specify:

  • Year of founding (and dissolution if applicable)
  • Notable works the organization is/was involved with (though in practice this becomes a comprehensive list)

Also add Category:Anime companies and/or Category:Animation studios as appropriate.

The standard infobox for articles related to anime conventions is {{Infobox Anime convention}}. It provides a brief set of statistics related to the convention.

To use this infobox, include the following at the very top of the article:

{{Infobox Anime convention
| convention_name =
| logo =
| size =
| caption =
| location =
| years =
| attendance =
| events =
| website =
}}

For usage details, including detailed information on the numerous optional parameters, refer to Template:Infobox Anime convention template. If you have any questions or problems with this infobox, you can discuss them on the template's talk page.

Stubs

For stubs about anime and manga, use {{anime-stub}} or {{manga-stub}}. This will automatically place the article into the Category:Anime and manga stubs category.

There are also a number of substubs that can be used when appropriate.

Articles that need attention

{{WikiProject Anime and manga}} is used on some anime and manga talk pages, it contains the To Do list. Articles that need editing to comply with the guidelines can be added to this to do list or any of its relevant subpages.

Requested articles

Articles which have been requested to be created can be found at Wikipedia:Requested articles/Japan/Anime and Manga. Feel free to fill some of these requests, as there are a lot of them. --Kunzite 01:03, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
