- 15 January – Harry Truman becomes the first President to broadcast his farewell address on radio and television.
- 19 March – The Academy Awards are simulcast on both radio and television. This marks the first time that the awards show appears on television.
- 3 May – German international broadcaster Deutsche Welle begins regular transmissions.
