In Tulane and Tulsa's first game as members of The American - and The American's first game of the 2014 season - the Golden Hurricane held on to beat the Green Wave in double overtime. Tulsa tied the game with 2:53 left, after nearly an entire game with Tulane in the lead. In a reversal of the previous season, the Wave appeared stronger offensively than defensively, allowing 551 yards in regulation time. Redshirt freshman Tanner Lee threw for 262 yards with 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. Redshirt freshman running back Sherman Badie had a 90-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, the longest by a Tulane player in 21 years, and in the third and fourth quarters, he had 75-yard and 73-yard runs, respectively.[7][9]

This was Tulane's first game on its Uptown campus in nearly 40 years, as it was the grand opening of the Green Wave's new, $73-million Yulman Stadium. The game sold out 14 minutes after single-game tickets went on sale,[12] and students picked up roughly 5,000 tickets for the game (about 40% of the entire undergraduate and graduate enrollment of the university), making it the largest student crowd at a Tulane game since football moved off campus in 1975.[13][14]

On the first play from scrimmage, linebacker Eric Thomas forced a Georgia Tech fumble, which Royce LaFrance returned to the Yellow Jackets' 8-yard line one play before Justyn Shackleford caught a touchdown pass.[15]

After the Wave took a 31-17 lead late in the 4th quarter, the Cougars scored a touchdown and then recovered an onside kick, driving into the red zone. On the last play of the game though, Parry Nickerson made his second interception of the night as time expired.[30] With starters Sherman Badie and Lazedrick Thompson injured for the game, all 31 of the Green Wave's points were scored by true freshmen - Teddy Veal, Dontrell Hilliard, Leondre James, and Andrew DiRocco. The win snapped a 10-game losing streak to Houston, and an 18-game losing streak in games played outside the state of Louisiana.[31]
