The 2020 Turkish Grand Prix (officially known as the Formula 1 DHL Turkish Grand Prix 2020) was a Formula One motor race which took place on 15 November 2020 at Intercity Istanbul Park in Tuzla, Turkey.[1] The race was the 14th round of the 2020 Formula One World Championship and the eighth running of the Turkish Grand Prix.
Background
Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic
The opening rounds of the 2020 championship were heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Several Grands Prix were cancelled or postponed after the aborted opening round in Australia, prompting the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile to draft a new calendar. In August 2020, the Turkish Grand Prix was added to the calendar, for the first time since 2011.[2][3] Initially, it was planned that 100,000 spectators could attend. However, due to a surge of COVID-19 cases in the country, organisers announced that the Grand Prix would take place behind closed doors.[4][5]
Track changes
A second DRS zone was added between turns 14 and 1, to aid overtaking. The detection point was established after turn 13. During the 2011 Turkish Grand Prix only the DRS zone located between turns 11 and 12 was used.[6]
Entrants
The drivers and teams were the same as those on the season entry list with no additional stand-in drivers for either the race or practice.[7]
Tyres
Pirelli brought their C1, C2 and C3 compound tyres for teams to use in the race.[8] Following Friday's practice sessions, the head of Pirelli's Formula One tyre programme Mario Isola admitted that Pirelli had not been aware of the resurfacing which had been done to the track two weeks prior; they would have brought softer tyre compounds which would suit the smoother surface better had they known, with drivers struggling to maintain the tyre temperature needed for the tyre to operate efficiently.[9][10]
Championship permutations
Lewis Hamilton will win the World Championship if Valtteri Bottas fails to outscore him by 8 points. This means that Bottas must finish in top 6 to retain the possibility of winning the title. If Hamilton finishes in second place, Bottas must win the race and set the fastest lap to remain in championship contention.[11] Hamilton has equalled Micheal Schumacher's titles.
Practice
The first practice session ended with Max Verstappen fastest ahead of Red Bull teammate Alexander Albon with Charles Leclerc third fastest for Ferrari. Lap times were significantly slower than expected with drivers stating there was a lack of grip following the track being resurfaced.[12][13] Lap times in first practice were approximately ten seconds slower that those set at the circuit's previous Formula One race[c] and twenty seconds slower that the laps times that were expected in qualifying.[14][15] The second practice session ended with Verstappen fastest ahead of Leclerc and the Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas.[16] The third practice session was held in wet conditions and ended with Verstappen fastest ahead of Leclerc and Albon.[17]
Qualifying
Racing Point driver Lance Stroll scored the maiden Formula One pole position of his career in a qualifying session defined by a tricky low grip track surface and damp weather conditions. It was the first pole for a Canadian driver, and first pole for a driver from North America, since Jacques Villeneuve's pole at the 1997 European Grand Prix.[18] Max Verstappen qualified second for Red Bull with the other Racing Point of Sergio Pérez in third and Alexander Albon in fourth in the other Red Bull with the Renault of Daniel Ricciardo in fifth. Constructors' champions Mercedes had a poor session with Lewis Hamilton qualifying in sixth place and Valtteri Bottas in ninth, this being the first pole position in 2020 not to go to a Mercedes driver. Meanwhile, Alfa Romeo had their best qualifying of the season with Kimi Räikkönen eighth and Antonio Giovinazzi tenth.[19][20][21][22] Racing Point's pole position was also the first pole for a Mercedes-engine customer team since 2014 Austrian Grand Prix.
Stroll was along with several other drivers investigated for failing to slow for yellow flags after a spin for team mate in the third part of qualifying. However, he was later cleared of any wrong doing as he was deemed to have slowed sufficiently for the incident under single waved yellow flags and that the drying track surface contributed significantly to improvements in his sector times thereby giving acceptable mitigation to Stroll's improved lap time.[23] Lando Norris and George Russell were penalised five places for failing to abort their laps in the first part of qualifying for double waved yellow flags as is required by regulations.[24][25] Carlos Sainz Jr. was also given a grid penalty for impeding Pérez in the first part of qualifying.[26] A review was launched after the second segment of qualifying was started whilst race marshals were still using a crane to recover the car of Nicholas Latifi who had spun off in the previous session.[27]
