The 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship is a planned motor racing championship for Formula 2 cars that will be sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). The championship will be the fifty-sixth season of Formula 2 racing and the sixth season run under the FIA Formula 2 Championship moniker. It is an open-wheel racing category that serves as the second tier of formula racing in the FIA Global Pathway. The category is scheduled to be run in support of selected rounds of the 2022 FIA Formula One World Championship. As the championship is a spec series, all teams and drivers competing in the championship will run the same car, the Dallara F2 2018.[1][2]

Entries

The following teams and drivers are under contract to compete in the 2022 championship.[3] As the championship is a spec series, all competitors race with an identical Dallara F2 2018 chassis with a V6 turbo engine developed by Mecachrome. Teams compete with tyres supplied by Pirelli.

Team changes

After having ended their commitment in FIA Formula 3 beforehand, HWA Racelab ended their Formula 2 operations at the end of the 2021 season.[4] Van Amersfoort Racing will join the series, taking over their entry.[5]

Driver changes

Prema Racing will compete with a new driver lineup; Oscar Piastri is set to leave the championship after winning the title the previous year and signing as a reserve driver for Alpine F1 Team. His teammate, Robert Shwartzman, will exit after two years in the series to become a test driver for Ferrari.[6][7][8]

Dennis Hauger will join the series with Prema after winning the FIA Formula 3 championship the previous year. His teammate will be fellow Red Bull junior Jehan Daruvala, switching from Carlin.[9] His seat at Carlin will be filled by Liam Lawson, moving over from Hitech Grand Prix.[10]

Dan Ticktum will leave Carlin and the series at the end of the 2021 season to join Formula E, where he will be racing for NIO 333. His seat will be filled by Logan Sargeant, who steps up from Formula 3 after already contesting the penultimate round of the 2021 season with HWA Racelab.[11][12]

Marcus Armstrong will leave DAMS, where he will be replaced by Red Bull junior Ayumu Iwasa, graduating from FIA Formula 3.[13]

Christian Lundgaard will leave ART Grand Prix and the series after two seasons. He will join the IndyCar Series, racing for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.[14]

Guanyu Zhou will leave UNI-Virtuosi and the series after three years with the team to graduate to Formula One with Alfa Romeo Racing. His seat will be filled by Marino Sato, who switched from Trident. Jack Doohan will join him after finishing second in F3 in 2021, having already contested the final two rounds of 2021 with MP Motorsport. He replaces Felipe Drugovich, who has confirmed he will switch teams for 2022, rejoining his old team MP Motorsport.[15][16]

Clément Novalak will retain his seat at MP Motorsport for the 2022 season, having replaced Lirim Zendeli at the team for the final two rounds in 2021 after finishing third in FIA Formula 3.[17]

Cem Bölükbaşı will join Charouz Racing System, making the step up from Euroformula Open.[18]

Calan Williams will join Trident Racing after competing in the 2021 FIA Formula 3 Championship for Jenzer Motorsport.[19]

Calendar changes

The championship returned to a two-race format for its race weekends, after coming under criticism during the 2021 season that the gaps between the rounds were far too large.

Regulation changes

Sporting changes

The championship will have a reprofiled scoring format. The points for pole position and fastest lap will each be cut in half; now awarding 2 points for pole, and 1 for the fastest lap in each race. The sprint race points will be changed significantly, with 10 points being awarded for the winner, 8 points for 2nd, then 6 for 3rd, and it descends all the way to 1 point for 8th. Changes will also be applied for Formula 1’s other feeder series, the FIA Formula 3 Championship.[21]
