The 28th Filmfare Awards were held in 1981. Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Khoobsurat won the Best Film Award, but it was Govind Nihalani's directorial debut Aakrosh that was the biggest winner on the night, including the Best Director trophy for Nihalani, with his first film as director.
