It contains six remixes of the songs from Knowles' fourth studio album, 4, released in 2011; a Dave Audé remix of "Run the World (Girls)", Isa Machine remix of "Countdown", Lars B remix of "Best Thing I Never Had", DJ Escape and Tony Coluccio remix of "Love on Top" and two remixes of "End of Time" by WAWA and JIMEK.

On February 8, 2012, it was announced through Knowles' website[1] and a press release issued by Parkwood Entertainment/Columbia Records[2] that "End of Time" will be released as the fifth single from 4.[3] Preceding its release, Knowles called for a remix competition for the song in association with audio sharing site SoundCloud, which enabled votes on the submission of remixes[1] by participants, who had to be at least 18 years of age.[3] The contest, which was opened to entrants in 25 countries, lasted from February 8, 2012 to March 9, 2012;[2] according to Knowles' website, the remix winner would win a cash prize of $4,000 and the remix would be included on her then-unspecified upcoming release.[1]

Over two thousand entries have been uploaded to SoundCloud as of March 4, 2012, and the following day, another press release was issued, announcing the members of the international judging panel to choose the winner of the competition; the panel consists of Knowles, British musician Isabella Summers of Florence and the Machine, Dutch music producer and DJ Afrojack, the duo DJ and Polish producing team, WAWA, New York premier DJ Jus-Ske and Oscar-winning producer and composer Giorgio Moroder.[4] After that the SoundCloud community have voted on entries, the top 50 ranked eligible remixes were reviewed by the announced panel of judges; the originality, creativity and musicality of these 50 remixes were taken into consideration while giving them corresponding scores that enabled the judges to choose the grand prizewinner.[4] On April 17, the winner Radzimir Debski aka Jimek, was announced through a press release.[5][6][7]

Release and production

The same day, on April 17, 2012, it was announced through a press release that Knowles' will be releasing a remix extended play (EP) titled 4: The Remix. The cover artwork and the release date of April 24, 2012 in the US, were revealed the same day through the press release.[5] On April 23, 2011, the EP was released in digital stores in France[8], Ireland[9], United Kingdom,[10] Belgium,[11] Finland,[12] Denmark,[13] Australia,[14] New Zealand,[15] Greece,[16] Netherlands,[17] Sweden,[18] Poland,[19] Malta,[20] Argentina,[21] Colombia,[22] Brazil,[23] Mexico,[24] Canada,[25] and United States.[26][27][28]

The album consists of six remixes of Knowles' songs from her fourth studio album 4 (2011) which are reworked and "revamped" from the original.[5][29][30] It opens with a Dave Audé remix of "Run the World (Girls)", Isa Machine remix of "Countdown", Lars B remix of "Best Thing I Never Had", DJ Escape and Tony Coluccio remix of "Love on Top" and two remixes of "End of Time" by WAWA and JIMEK.[5][31] Ben Norman of the website About.com described the WAWA remix of "End of Time": "The beat is great and I feel this mix would definitely get people moving in a club. It's got just enough attitude to get Beyonce fans moving."[32]
