Rajah Muthiah Medical College (RMMC) is a Cuddalore government medical college located in Chidambaram, Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu, India. It operates Rajah Muthiah Medical College Hospital (RMMCH), a 1200-bed tertiary level centre with 24-hour emergency department and coronary care unit. It is affiliated to The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University from 2021.
History
Rajah Muthiah Institute of Health Sciences was established in the year 1980 with the opening of the Dental College. Thereafter in the second phase of development, the Rajah Muthiah Medical College Hospital (RMMCH) was established in the year 1985.[1]
In 2010, the Kalaignar Health Insurance Scheme for Life-Saving Treatments at RMMCH was instituted.[2]
On 14 February 2020, during the presentation of the budget allocation for the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare as part of the 2020 Union budget of India, it was announced that the government will take over RMMC and turn it into a government medical college.[3]
On 27 January 2021, during an Assembly meeting The Finance minister of Tamil Nadu O.Paneerselvam announced that The RMMCH totally comes under Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and it affiliation Change under The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University from Annamalai University then named as Cuddalore Government Medical College.[4]
Rajah Muthiah Medical College and Hospital
As of 2020, RMMCH has a bed strength of 1400 with 17 AC Operation Theatres, MRI and CT scanners, Endoscopes and other such medical facilities. Everyday the hospital treats about 2800 to 3000 outpatients and around 1000 inpatients. The hospital said that they conducted around 15,000 scheduled surgeries, 6000 emergency surgeries and 5,500 deliveries every year.
Controversies
Ragging incident 1996
Main Article: Murder of Pon Navarasu
In 1996, Pon Navarasu was a first year student in the college. He was ragged and murdered in 6 November 1996. After the incident, Tamil Nadu Government passed an anti-ragging ordinance criminalising ragging which formalised into Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1997.[5]
Fee issue 2021
During 2020-2021, the medicos of RMMC protested against hiked fees for UG and PG MBBS and BDS.The fee collected in RMMC is higher when compared to other Government medical colleges as well as Govt Aided seats in Self financing medical colleges in Tamil Nadu,which are affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University.As of 2020, it could be found that RMMC charges Rs. 5.4 lakhs for MBBS course and Rs. 9.6 lakhs for MD/MS courses, which is higher than Government Aided seats in Self-financing colleges which charged around Rs. 4 lakhs for MBBS course and Rs 3.5 lakhs for MD/MS courses per annum[6]
