Kakolat (Hindi: ककोलत जलप्रपात) (Urdu: کاکولات گرتا ہے۔) is the name of a waterfall located in the Nawada district of Bihar, India.[1][2]
Overview
Kakolat Waterfall is located on the border of Bihar, and is 33km from Nawada and 4km from Thali Bazar. Kakolat Waterfall cascades approximately 160 feet (49m), and forms a natural reservoir at it's base.[3] It is located near Govindpur police station and is surrounded by forest.
Kakolat Waterfall is a major tourist spot in southern Bihar, with many festivals and shows hosted nearby. People bathe in its cold waters, which remain that way year round. Kakolat is renowned for its scenic waters and landscapes.
Role in Indian mythology
A Treta Yuga king was cursed to become a python and live at Kakolat Falls by a Hindu spiritualist. During their exile, the waterfall was visited by the Pandavas. When visiting, the accursed king got rid of the curse. The king proclaimed any person who bathed in the waterfall would never be reborn as a snake, thus, devotees are known to bathe in Kakolat.[4] According to another perspective, Treta Yuga was cursed to turn into a Dragon and live at Kakolat. When the Pandavas visited, they rinsed him of his curse, and he declared anyone who bathed in the waters would not be reincarnated into a snake.[5]
