On 23 December 2002, the national association football teams of Indonesia and the Philippines faced each other in a 2002 Tiger Cup group stage game. The match was played at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia. The match is remembered as a historic match for all Indonesian people, because those games produced 14 goals: 13 goals for Indonesia, and a goal for the Philippines.[1]

Before this match Indonesia needed a winning margin of more than three goals in order to ensure they would advance to the next round, or hope the match between Myanmar and Vietnam, played at the same time, did not end in a draw.[2]

Background

Historical meeting between Indonesia and the Philippines first began at the Asian Games in 1958, when Indonesia beat the Philippines with a score of 5–2.[3] Since then they met a total of 17 times, 16 times Indonesia wins and only one draw. The draw was obtained when the two teams met in the 1977 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In total, Indonesia has put 80 goals past the Philippines, while the Philippines only scored 8 goals against Indonesia.

Match Summary

Indonesia started the game very quickly. Unexpectedly, Indonesia was able to destroy the Philippine defense and scored 7 goals in the first half. The supporters of the Indonesian national team did not believe the results that can be obtained. Indonesia led by a score of 7–0.

In the second half, again Indonesia scored 6 goals, although the Philippines had responded with a goal, but Indonesia has finally advanced to the semifinals by collecting 8 points, under the Vietnam national team who won the group with 10 points, and the Myanmar national team is ranked third with a difference just one point from Indonesia. Meanwhile, the Philippine national team is ranked last group with 0 points.
