Cats is a musical composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber , based on the 1939 poetry collection Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot . The musical has received many awards and nominations for its international productions. Cats premiered at the New London Theatre in the West End in 1981.[1] The original London production ran for 21 years[1] and was nominated for six Laurence Olivier Awards , winning two awards including Best New Musical . In 1982, it opened at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway where it played for 18 years.[2] The original Broadway production won seven Tony Awards , including Best Musical , out of eleven nominations. The Broadway cast recording also won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album .
