José Manuel Díaz Novoa (born 1 January 1944) is a Spanish retired footballer[1] and manager.[2] The majority of his coaching career was with Sporting Gijón.
Football career
Novoa was a midfielder who played for Sporting Gijón and Celta, a team with which he played a game in the First Division. He abandoned soccer practice at the age of 27, after a meniscus injury when he was a player for Real Avilés.
His popularity came as a coach, leading teams like Sporting Gijón, Celta de Vigo, Real Burgos and Espanyol.[3] He has also taken over the Asturias national football team twice.
He is the coach who has directed Sporting Gijón[4] the most times, with a total of 371 games, 230 of them in the First Division.[5]
