Shibli Faraz (Urdu: سید شبلی فراز) is a Pakistani politician who is serving as the Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting since 28 April 2020. He is member of Senate of Pakistan from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa since 2015.

Previously, Shibli has served as the Leader of the House for the Senate of Pakistan from 26 August 2018 till 04 June 2020. He is a senior member of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.[1][2][3]

Education

Faraz completed his Matriculation from Cadet College, Kohat .He completed his Bachelors from Edwards College, Peshawar, and followed it with an LL.B. from Law College, Peshawar. Completed his MA in International Relations from the University de Los Andes, Colombia in 1994.[4] Shibli has a fellowship in Finance & International Banking from Chartered Institute of Bankers, London.

He also holds a commercial pilot's license.

He has a firm grip on Pashto, English, Spanish and Urdu.

Professional and Political Career

Faraz is an investment banker by profession and was a Pakistan Air Force pilot and then a civil servant. He has contested the election for the Kohat District mayor in 2002 and his uncle Barrister Syed Masood Kausar had served as the Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He is the son of poet Ahmad Faraz.[5][6] His family is of Pashtun background.[7]

In 2015 he was elected as a Senator of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for a term until March 2021.

  11. Parliamentary Committee on the Appointment of Chairperson and Members of the National Commission for Human Rights.
  12. Parliamentary Consultation Committee on Legislative Business.
  13. Senate Special Committee on Circular Debt. (Convener Committee), he also made a comprehensive report on the circular debt of Pakistan.
  14. Public Accounts Committee of National Assembly of Pakistan.

He is also a member of the Central Selection Board (CSB).

In August 2018, Prime Minister Imran Khan appointed Faraz as the Leader of the House for the Senate of Pakistan, where he served until 04 June 2020.[8]

Prime Minister Imran Khan on 27 April 2020, appointed Shibli as the Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting along with General Asim Saleem Bajwa as Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Information and Broadcasting.[9] [10]

Family

Shibli Faraz is the son of Urdu poet Ahmad Faraz, and nephew of former Speaker of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Barrister Masood Kausar.[11] His brother, Sarmad Faraz is a marketing professional and musician.[12]
