SGO48 (read S.G.O. Forty-Eight) is a Vietnamese idol girl group and the sixth international sister group of AKB48. The group is named after Saigon, officially known as Ho Chi Minh City.
They currently have 26 members in the group.[1] They debuted on December 22, at Crescent Mall, District 7, Ho Chi Minh City.[2] Their first single, “Heavy Rotation” was announced on July 17th, 2019.
History
June 2018: Formation
On June 21, 2018, AKS Co. announced the formation of SGO48, based in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam[3][4], with the joint venture between CTCP Tập đoàn Yeah1 (YEG) and Geo Brain Corporation, and formed the YAG Entertainment company. Auditions began on August 8, 2018.[5] The auditions were done in 3 separate rounds : online registration, interview, and lastly, final round.[6] A concept for a SGO48 theater was brought up to conversation during the first livestream meeting with Japanese investors.[6]
August 2018: Auditions
In the first round, candidates had to apply online on their website by filling out personal information. 7627 applications were sent.[6]
On the second round, candidates were to perform and answer questions according to the judges. The Top 350 candidates were kept for the final round.[6]
On the final round, candidates had to do a dance check and perform on stage. Only the Top 120 were kept for the results.[6]
On November 11, 2018, 29 members were announced.[7] On December 13, 2018, it was announced that member BunnyV would graduate for personal reasons.
December 2018-January 2019: Concert Debut
They debuted with 28 members on December 22, 2018 at Crescent Mall in Ho Chi Minh City as part of their FanDebut concert. Spectators had to register on their official website prior to the show.[8] Over 1500 fans attended the concert, exceeding expectations for this newly-formed group.[9]. Multiple fans of the sister groups showed their support through social media. Lightsticks and fans were given to the audience. The girl group performed 4 songs in total: “Shonichi”, “Aitakatta”, “Shoujotachi Yo”, and “SGO48”, in Vietnamese lyrics.
10 members (Trúc Phạm, Anna, Hikari, Janie, Kaycee, Lệ Trang, Linh Mai, Mon, Sachi, and Trùng Duơng) of the Vietnamese girl group are set to perform for the first time internationally at the 2019 Asia Festival, presented by SHANDA GAMES, in Bangkok, Thailand, on January 27, 2019.[10][11].
18 November 2018, SGO48 members with AKB48 Team 8 members Yokyoyama Yui, Shimizu Maria, Oda Erina, Hama Sayuna, Shitao Miu and Gyoten Yurina appeared in Hanoi's local event "Kizuna Ekiden 2018" [12][13].
July-August 2019 : Debut EP and first single
On July 17 2019, it was announced via a press conference that their first single would be “Heavy Rotation”. The album comes in 3 types: Type A; Type B; Type C. Each type includes different members on the album cover. Inside the album, the first single comes with : a digital card that includes a code where you can download the songs on the front and a random member photocard on the back; a handshake event ticket; a lyric book; and a bonus photocard. Five hours after it was announced, 1000 preorders were purchased. The included songs are “Heavy Rotation”, “SGO48”, “Shonichi”, and “Aitakatta”. The release of the album was put on the 18th of August, 2019.
On August 24 2019, SGO48 joined their sister groups at the AKB48 Group Asia Festival in Shanghai, and performed “Heavy Rotation”, “Namida Surprise!”, “Kokoro No Placard (Japanese ver.)”, “Ponytail to Shushu”, and “365 Nichi no Kamihikouki”.
On December 7th 2019 at the Koisuru Xmas Party, it was announced that the second single is Koisuru Fortune Cookie and a new senbatsu was revealed. The music video was premiered during the event and is set to be released on December 12th, 2019 on social media platforms.
On December 31st 2019 at 70th Kōhaku Uta Gassen, Anna attended as the first Vietnamese person together with other 48 groups.[14][15].

Possibility of Vietnamese sister groups
YAG Entertaiment teased the potentially Vietnamese sister groups HNO48 (Hà Nội) and DNA48 (Đà Nẵng), if SGO48’s success was to be maintained.[20][21]
