"Black Beauty" is a song recorded by American singer and songwriter Lana Del Rey for her third studio album, Ultraviolence (2014). The lyrics and musical composition are attributed to Del Rey and Rick Nowels, while production was handled by Paul Epworth.[1] It serves as the first bonus track from the album. A demo of the song leaked on June 18, 2013.[citation needed] The German release of a remixes extended play for "Black Beauty" by Vertigo Berlin was announced for November 21, 2014.

Background

In early 2013, Del Rey stated that she had been working on her third studio album and had written the song "Black Beauty" for it,[2] but after it leaked the status of the song on the album became unknown. The song is about Del Rey loving a man who doesn't appreciate the beauty of life, and lamenting the sadness of this.[citation needed] It was confirmed on May 8, 2014 that it would be a bonus track on Ultraviolence.[3]

Composition

The song "Black Beauty" has a track length of 5 minutes and 14 seconds. The song has a time signature of 4/4, is played in the key of F, and has a BPM (beats per minute) of about 120. While the original demo track featured Del Rey singing over a synthesized organ with bass and stringed instruments, the album version included a mellotron choir and electric guitar.

Critical reception

MuuMuse's Bradley Stern compared the song to Del Rey's 2012 single "Ride", calling it "an unbelievably gorgeous track" and "one of Lana's greatest epics".[4]
