Salwan is a village of high historical interest in Karnal District, and one of the biggest village in karnal, Haryana, India. It contains a tirtha identified as having national importance. The major population of the area are Madadh(clan) from Rajput and Brahman caste. The Rajputs are a martial race and caste of the Indian subcontinent. They are a Hindu caste whose members are generally considered to belong to the ("warrior") varna (division of society).

The village was the subject of much media attention in 2007, when the beating death of a [Rajput] man was followed by a wave of violence directed toward local dalits. About 150 lower-caste families fled the village.
