Urusei Yatsura is a manga series by Rumiko Takahashi that was later adapted into an anime series. The series was adapted by Kitty Films into a 195 episode TV series (including episode 193.5) that aired from October 14, 1981 to March 19, 1986 on Fuji Television. With the exception of episodes 10 and 11, the first 21 episodes were composed of two 11-minute stories. The series aired on October 14, 1981 with the two part episode "I'm Lum-chan the Notorious!" / "It's Raining Oil All Over Town". The first 106 episodes were directed by Mamoru Oshii and the remainder by Kazuo Yamazaki.[1][2] Urusei Yatsura concluded about five years later on March 19, 1986 with the 194th episode "All-Star Banquet! We Are Immortal!!". Episode 193.5 "Urusei Yatsura Immediate Farewell Special - Shine!! Planet Uru Award" is a repeat of episode 44 "After You've Gone" with a special introduction and best episode countdown before the episode.

Six opening theme songs and nine closing themes were used during the series.[3] Lum no Love Song (ラムのラブソング) was used as the opening theme for the first 77 episodes.[4][5] It was replaced by Dancing Star for episodes 78 to 106.[6] Pajama Jama da! (パジャマ・じゃまだ!) was used for episodes 107 to 127, and Chance on Love was used for episodes 128 to 149.[2][7] The final 2 opening themes were Rock the Planet for episodes 150 to 165 and Tonogata Gomen Asobase (殿方ごめん遊ばせ) for the remaining episodes.[8][9] A total of 9 ending themes were used. The first ending theme was Uchuu wa Taihen da! (宇宙は大ヘンだ) which was used for the first 21 episodes.[4] It was replaced by Kokorobosoi na (心細いな) for episodes 22 to 43 and by Hoshizora Cycling (星空サイクリング) for episodes 44 to 54 and newer prints of episodes 65 to 77.[1][10] I, I, You and Ai was used for episodes 55 to 77 but current prints of episodes 65 to 77 used the third ending theme, and Yume wa Love me More (夢はLove me More) was used for episodes 78 to 106.[5][6] Koi no Mobius (恋のメビウス) was used for episodes 107 to 127, and Open Invitation was used for episodes 128 to 149.[2][7] The final two ending themes were Every Day for episodes 150 to 165, and Good Luck for the remainder of the series.[8][9]

On December 10, 1983, the first VHS release of the series was made available in Japan.[11] The series was also released on fifty Laserdiscs.[12] Another VHS release across fifty cassettes began on March 17, 1998 and concluded on April 19, 2000.[13][14] In 1987, 6,000 laserdisc box sets of the anime series costing ¥330,000 each were sold out, generating ¥1.98 billion ($18 million) in retail sales.[15] Two DVD boxsets of the series were released between December 8, 2000 and March 9, 2001.[16][17] These were followed by fifty individual volumes between August 24, 2001 and August 23, 2002.[18][19]

During 1992, the series was licensed for a North American release by AnimEigo. Their VHS release began in October of the same year and was among the first anime titles to receive a subtitled North American release. However the release schedule was erratic.[20][21][22] AnimEigo later released the series on DVD. The series was available in box set form as well as individual releases. A total of 10 boxsets and 50 individual DVDs were released between March 27, 2001 and June 20, 2006.[23][24] Each DVD and VHS contained Liner notes explaining the cultural references and puns from the series.[25] In February 2011 AnimEigo announced that it would not renew their license to the series and that their DVDs would fall out of print on September 30, 2011. A fan group known as "Lum's Stormtroopers" convinced the Californian public television station KTEH to broadcast subtitled episodes of the series in 1998.[21]

"It's Raining Oil All Over Town": A week after the previous episode, a group of Tomobiki High School boys (later known as Lum's Stormtroopers) wanted Lum to come back to Earth, and happen to successfully capture Ataru (who also failed in his attempt to flee the country). The group invited a member of the Torture Research Club to join the group. Ataru thinks its nothing compared to Lum's electric shock and said he would rather die then see Lum again. Shinodu then comes in and worried about Ataru. Shinodu warned about Ataru to not call for Lum or else she would take over his life, but one of the Stormtroopers says to Ataru that he doesn't like violence, and wants back him up for him cheating on all kinds of exams. Shinodu still warns Ataru about this, but he says that he is in pleasure on this particular moment. Shinodu then gets angry at him, and ties him up to a part of the top of the school. The group then begins to hail on the UFOs by their hand together and say "Ventura ventura, space people!" multiple times. As the gang saw something in the sky, they continued doing the same thing with more effort. The group then summon a UFO, and thought it was Lum's, but it turns out to be a different UFO, and Ataru and the group all get sucked in the UFO. The stormtroopers thought that the alien would take them to his planet, where they would be used as specimens and killed, Ataru though says that he wants to get out and go home. The stormtroopers didn't want Ataru to irritate the alien, but he did it anyway and the alien takes them all to the Moroboshi house. The alien confirms himself to be the Space Taxi Driver, and said that when he was drivin' nearby, he heard a strong call, so he just hovered down, now cough up with Ataru's fare. Ataru then wants to know the cost of the ride, the alien said that it costs 3.8 mega-credits, roughly equal to all the oil of the planet. Ataru says that it is too expensive, but the alien said to not mess with the Space Taxi Union, and they will get what Ataru owe to them no matter what. Meanwhile, multiple space taxis get all of the oil from the planet, per Ataru's cost (though one man said to get back some of the oil though). As the news reported about this, Ataru's dad gets very angry about his son, saying that a monster like him would never be his son of his. Ataru's mom then notices a lynch mob, so the people in the house try to protect them selfs by using all of the furniture in the house to not let the mob in, Ataru's mom thinks that this is the end of her family, so does Ataru's dad, but then after a explosion, Lum is happy to see Ataru again. After this, one man said that Lum has said that she'd be willing the pay the amount owed, well only if she lives with Ataru, but Ataru refuses but everyone wants him to still stay with Lum. If he doesn't want to stay with Lum, all of the oil in the world would get sucked up. Lum still wants to be the only one to save Ataru, but he still says no to her. With this, she begins crying and the stormtroopers beat him up, but Ataru finally says yes to take care of the payment and want to live with her together. Lum then gets happy about this and the space taxi alien says that he would be returning all of the oil within a week. A week later, oil has now been raining constantly since the week before. The news reporter then warns people to not smoke, but someone already smoked, and the news reporter said to him that puff leads to destruction. Ataru is then seen following Shinodu, but she doesn't care anymore as he now has Lum. The group then gets Lum's attention to see them.
