Nag Ashwin is an Indian film director and screenwriter known for his works in Telugu cinema. He made his directorial debut in 2015 with the coming-of-age philosophical drama film Yevade Subramanyam which received positive reviews.[1]

In 2018 he directed the multilingual biographical film Mahanati, based on the life of late southern actress and star Savitri.[2] At the 66th National Film Awards 2019, the film won accolades including the Best Feature Film in Telugu.[3][4] Nag Ashwin received the Filmfare Award for Best Director – Telugu at the 66th Filmfare Awards South.[5]

Mahanati was showcased in the Indian Panorama Mainstream section at the 49th International Film Festival of India,[6] and has also garnered the "Equality in Cinema Award" at the 2018 Indian Film Festival of Melbourne.[7] He is about to direct his next film featuring Prabhas and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles and the film is tentatively titled as #Prabhas21.

Early life

Nag Ashwin was born in Hyderabad to Dr Jayaram Reddy and Dr L. Jayanthi Reddy, a gynecologist. He studied in Hyderabad Public School and received bachelor's degree in Mass Communication from Manipal.[8] He then did a Film Direction course at the New York Film Academy.

Career

Nag Ashwin began his film industry career as an assistant director for the film Nenu Meeku Telusa...?.[9] He has then worked as an assistant director with Sekhar Kammula for the films Leader (2010 film) and Life Is Beautiful (2012 film).[10][11][12][13]

Personal life

He is married to Priyanka Dutt, daughter of producer C. Ashwini Dutt of Vyjayanthi Movies.[14] They have a son who was born in 2016
