The Citra Award for Best Supporting Actress (Indonesian: Piala Citra untuk Pemeran Pendukung Wanita Terbaik) is an award given at the Indonesian Film Festival (IFF) to Indonesian actresses for their achievements in supporting roles. The Citra Awards, described by Screen International as "Indonesia's equivalent to the Oscars",[1] are the country's most prestigious film awards.[2] They are intended to recognise Indonesian achievements in film and draw the public's interest to the cinema industry.[3] Initially winners were selected from all entries by a jury, but owing to efficiency concerns and widespread disapproval of winners within the Indonesian film industry, beginning in 1979 the IFF instituted a nomination system in which a committee selected the Citra Award recipients from a shortlist of three to six nominees.[4] Since 1986 the shortlist has remained at five selections.
The Citra Awards, then known as the Indonesian Film Festival Awards, were first given at the IFF in early 1955; that year's Best Supporting Actress was Endang Kusdiningsih for her role in Tarmina. Succeeding festivals were held in 1960 and 1967. From 1973 the IFF was held annually.[5] This continued uninterrupted until after the 1992 IFF, when a sharp decline in film production led the festival to be discontinued. It was reinstated as an annual event in 2004, after receiving funds from the Indonesian government.[1][6] The most recent winner is Raihaanun, who won a Citra Award at the 2016 IFF for her acting in Salawaku.[7]
A total of 68 actresses have been nominated for a Citra Award, 26 of whom have won at least one. The most recognised actress at the IFF has been Nani Wijaya, who won two awards from five nominations beginning with Yang Muda Yang Bercinta in 1978.[8] Only one other actress, Niniek L. Karim, has won multiple Citra Awards, whilst Rina Hasyim (with six) and Rima Melati have received at least five nominations. Seven films have seen multiple cast members receive nominations, four of which earned a win. As of 2013[update] Shanty is the only actress to receive more than one nomination in a single year; in the 2007 ceremony she was nominated for her performances in Kala and Maaf, Saya Menghamili Istri Anda.
