University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) was established in 1917, under the name Government Engineering College, by Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya, and was then affiliated to Bangalore University. It is the fifth engineering college to be established in the country. UVCE is a constituent college of Bangalore University which gives it a special status of a university. UVCE is one of the few technical institutions in the country that is vested with the status of a university. It is one of the oldest technical institutions in the country, imparting technical education leading to B.E, B.Arch, M.E, M.Arch and PhD degrees in the various disciplines of Engineering and Architecture. The college is approved by the AICTE and the Government of Karnataka. The departments are accredited with five A+ for three years by the National Board of Accreditation, New Delhi. UVCE has a NAAC rating of five stars for the past four consecutive years.[when?] The college receives financial aid[2] under the TEQIP program from the World Bank.
History
In 1917, the then Diwan of Mysore, Sir M. Visvesvaraya, felt a need to have an engineering college in the state as the Civil Engineering College Madras and College of Engineering Poona were unable to accommodate enough students from Mysore State.
He started the college in 1917 in Bangalore as a School of Engineering with 20 students in civil and mechanical engineering branches in the PWD building. S.V. Setty was a founder professor. It was the fifth engineering college to be started in India and the first one in Mysore State. In 1965, the name of the college was changed to University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering after its founder.
Situated at Krishna Rajendra Circle, in the neighborhood of Vidhaana Soudha (the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council building of the Government of Karnataka), the city campus houses the departments of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering and Computer Science & Engineering. At the Jnana Bharathi campus, which is located near the suburb of Kengeri and is the hub of Bangalore University, there are the post graduate academic buildings and the departments of Civil Engineering and Architecture of the UVCE.
Campus
UVCE is a constituent college of Bangalore University which gives it a special university status, a privilege granted to only a few institutions in the country.[3][4] The campus has an academic sector equipped with modern laboratories and facilities. The residential area has hostels for both the boys and the girls. There are playgrounds and spaces where events and functions happen from time to time. UVCE is situated at KR Circle and in the neighborhood of Vidhana Soudha, Government of Karnataka, with a campus area spreading over 15 acres, housing in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Computer Science Engineering. The institute runs Civil and Architecture courses at Jnana Bharathi Campus, Bangalore occupying land area of 50 acres. The college provides hostel facilities for boys and girls separately both in the Jnana Bharathi and city campus.
The college updates the curriculum and syllabus regularly. The college has conducted over 50 workshops, 6 International Conferences in the last four years and has published more than 500 Research/technical papers in various International journals. Repute publishers have brought out 35 books authored by the staff of UVCE.[citation needed]
Admission
The college admits students based on the following entrance exams:
- Undergraduate programmes
- Common Entrance Test, conducted by the Karnataka Examinations Authority.
- Postgraduate programmes
- Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) conducted by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).[5]

Academic programmes
The institution offers seven undergraduate (B.E / B.Arch) and twenty-four postgraduate (M.E / M.Arch.) programmes. The institute has awarded 153 Ph.D degrees. At present[when?] there are 135 candidates pursuing their Ph.D. The Department of Civil Engineering being a recognized QIP center from MHRD, has completed more than 50 consultancy projects. The teaching faculty has completed / engaged in number of R & D projects sponsored by UGC, AICTE, MHRD, AR&DB, ADA, Naval Research Board, National Highways, etc. including an Indo-European project. Forty three Books have been published by the faculty members of UVCE.

Autonomy
Autonomous status is considered the only way that UVCE can regain its glory as a leading technical institution of the nation [7]. A committee was formed by the Government of Karnataka with an Annamalai-University-graduate, Prof. Sadagopan, as the chairman, to explore the procedure. [8]
Student life and festivals
Milagro
Milagro[9][10] is the annual inter-collegiate cultural fest that is organized in UVCE. This event draws crowds of up to 2,000 and is organized during March - April.[11][12]
Inspiron
Since its inception in 2009, Inspiron has been hosted by The Training and Placement Office, UVCE.[13] This fest provides the students an opportunity to hone as well as showcase their practical know - how by organizing events that focus on all the key areas of personal development. This initiative from The Training and Placement Office gives every student a platform to compete with the best minds not only within the college, but also with those from different colleges across Bangalore. In addition to testing the knowledge and awareness of students, the events are designed to help them improve their communication and marketing skills as well. This inter-collegiate Techno-Managerial extravaganza from UVCE has been received very well and has attracted a lot of crowd over the past years.
Impetus
IMPETUS is a national-level technical extravaganza organised by IEEE UVCE which was started in the year 2001.[14] For eighteen years now, it has been serving as a platform for the students to showcase their skills and share their views. It brings together the brilliant minds, whose direction of thought has been streamlined by extensive knowledge, to compete in an arena marked by fight for creativity, excellence and innovation. Held on an inter-collegiate level, this fest sees a footfall of over 1000 students every year. IMPETUS is a technical fest designed for a change and with vivid difference.
Corporate companies like IBM, Yahoo!, NIIT, Motorola, Cognizant, Infosys, DELL etc. and Government organisations like BWSSB and BESCOM sponsor the fest. The event hosts both technical events like Circuit Debugging, OSP, Web Designing, Technical Quiz and non-technical events like Mad Ads, Ad-Venture, Team building event, Marketing event, Mock stock etc.
Kagada
KAGADA[15] is a National Level Annual Technical Paper Presentation Contest organized by IEEEUVCE.
Convocation
Every year convocation[16] is held in June, where degrees are awarded to graduating students.
