Kaniz Ali (born July 1985) is a Bangladeshi-born British makeup artist and freelance beauty columnist. She is the founder and director of Kanizmakeup and Kanizmakeup Training Academy.[citation needed]

Early life

Ali was born in Bangladesh, her parents moved to London, England shortly after her birth and she has lived in West London for most of her life. She is the eldest of five siblings.[1] and was brought up in a Muslim household.[2]

At the age of 13, Ali won a writing competition, and her poem was later published in a children's anthology. She achieved high grades during her secondary education.[3]

Ali studied a foundation course in Makeup at Uxbridge College during the weekends while still studying full-time.[3] In 2007, she graduated with a LLB Law degree,[3] from University College London[1] and then went on to work for international law firm Bird & Bird, based in Chancery Lane, London.

Career

Ali planned on becoming a lawyer but discarded this to follow a career in cosmetics, after being approached by a small publication who noticed her work. At the same time she was also approached by Fenchurch Clothing to work with them on their new collection shoot.[1]

Ali's work has featured in numerous magazines including Asiana, Asiana Wedding, Asian Woman, Asian Bride, Fanfair, Asian Wedding Directory, Remedy, Shout, Eastern Eye, The Muslim Paper and London Bangla.[1]

In October 2007, Ali established Kanizmakeup, which consisted of various projects, including branded products produced by Kanizmakeup.[3]

In October 2009, she established the Kanizmakeup Training Academy, following a number of requests from clients to learn tips and techniques from her. She now holds regular practical workshops throughout the year, and also teaches make-up, fashion and bridal courses.[3]

In May 2010, she decided to build up a team of make-up artists called the "Kanizmakeup Team". This gives opportunities to new artists to build up their portfolios and work alongside her on mainstream high fashion catwalks and shows. Due to her busy schedule the team now look after some of her projects. She also has an in-house team of models and photographer who work for her mum.

Awards and nominations

In November 2008, Ali was shortlisted for "The Best Make Up Artist Award", at The Asian Style Awards.[1] In November 2011 she won the "Best Make-Up Artist category", at the International Asian Fashion Awards, held at the Hilton Hotel in Park Lane, London.[4][5]
