Darius (Persian: داریوش) is a male given name. Etymologically it is the English transliteration of the Persian name Dariush, meaning "he possesses" or "rich and kingly". The name also has another meaning: "He who holds firm to good."

The origin of the name is the Old Persian 𐎭𐎠𐎼𐎹𐎺𐎢𐏁 Dārayavauš ), composed of 𐎭𐎠𐎼𐎹 dāraya- 'to hold' + 𐎺𐎢 va(h)u- 'good', meaning "he who holds firm the good",[1] from Proto-Indo-European *dʰer-, 'to hold' and analogous to:
