Production
Development
It was reported in October 2008 that Universal Pictures was planning to produce a third theatrically released sequel to the first film.[3][4] Reports resurfaced of such a project in February 2010, with "some of the original cast" expressing interest in returning.[5][6] In April 2010, it was confirmed that the film was in pre-production, with Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg signed on to write and direct and plans of reuniting the cast of the primary series.[7]
Casting
In March 2011, it was also announced that Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott and Eugene Levy have signed on to reprise their roles.[8] In April 2011, Alyson Hannigan, Chris Klein and Mena Suvari signed on.[9][10][11] In May 2011, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Tara Reid, Eddie Kaye Thomas,[12] Shannon Elizabeth,[13]and Jennifer Coolidge[14] signed on. Katrina Bowden signed on to appear as Klein's girlfriend who is an "L.A. party girl type".[15] Dania Ramirez was cast as Trisha, "the ugly duckling nobody noticed in high school who has since grown into a beautiful swan, much to Finch’s delight".[16]
On May 18, 2011, a casting call went out for the character "Kara", a role that involved "upper frontal nudity".[17]
Filming
American Reunion began principal photography in late May 2011 in Atlanta, Georgia.[18]
