Biswas (pronounced in Bengali as "bish-shash") is a common surname in West Bengal, Bihar among Indian Hindus, mostly Bengalis. In Bengali, Biswas means trustworthy.

Some Hindus, Christians and Muslims of India and Bangladesh have the surname of Biswas, originating during a later period. Biswas was a title given to trustworthy persons during the Mughal and British period.[citation needed]
