Bound for Glory (2012)

Bound for Glory (2011) was a professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA), that took place on October 16, 2011 at the Liacouras Center on the campus of Temple University in Philadelphia.[3] It was the seventh annual event under the Bound for Glory chronology. Bound For Glory is considered to be the premiere event of the year for TNA. This event was the first Bound for Glory in the city of Philadelphia and the second TNA PPV to be held in Philadelphia after TNA Lockdown in 2009. This was also the first TNA PPV that to be simulcast live in over 100 theaters across the country [1].

Production

It was announced on July 13, 2011 that the location for this year's annual Bound for Glory would be revealed the following day on ESPN.com on Page 2.[4] The next day, Sting, in his interview with ESPN SportsCenter anchor Robert Flores, declared that the event would emanate from Philadelphia at the Liacouras Center on October 16, 2011. Tickets sales for the event went on sale on July 22, 2011.[5]

On September 18, 2011, a new series called The Bound for Glory Chronicles debuted on TNA's website. The show featured exclusive interviews with wrestlers talking about their memories from previous Bound for Glory events. The wrestlers to have featured on this series so far, include Jeff Jarrett and Matt Morgan.[6]

For the PPV, TNA has also organized the second Bound for Glory VIP Weekend which includes events such as Fan InterAction held at the Philadelphia Airport Marriot on the eve of Bound for Glory. This is a series of fan interaction sessions, which allows fans to get close and personal with their favorite stars for opportunities such as pictures, autographs and special interviews. Other events include the Night Before the Glory Dinner Party, which will feature more interaction between the fans and wrestlers after the Fan InterAction.

Background

The primary feud heading into Bound for Glory was between Sting and Hulk Hogan. On the January 4, 2010 special 3 hour Monday night edition of TNA Impact, Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff debuted in TNA. From the moment they arrived, Sting thought that they were up to something. Eventually, he was joined by Kevin Nash and D'Angelo Dinero. At Bound for Glory, it was revealed that Sting was right about Hogan, where he, Eric Bischoff, Jeff Jarrett, Abyss and newly crowned TNA World Heavyweight Champion Jeff Hardy were revealed to be the "They" that Abyss had been referring to for the past several months. On the following Impact, the group was named Immortal. Sting and Kevin Nash were invited to join Immortal, but the two walked out on TNA. After several months of Immortal controlling TNA, Sting returned on the March 3rd edition of Impact Wrestling, Sting returned and defeated Jeff Hardy to win the TNA World Heavyweight Championship. On March 13th at Victory Road, Sting defeated Hardy in a rematch that lasted 90 seconds. Over the next few months, Sting kept his TNA World Heavyweight Championship and continued to feud with Immortal. At Slammiversary IX, Sting lost the TNA World Heavyweight Championship to Mr. Anderson. On the July 14th edition of impact, Sting regained the TNA World Heavyweight Championship. On August 8 at Hardcore Justice, Sting lost the TNA World Heavyweight Championship to Kurt Angle following interference from Hogan, recruiting Angle to Immortal in the process. Sting received rematches on the September 1 edition of Impact Wrestling, and on September 11 at No Surrender in a three way match, also involving Mr. Anderson, but failed in both attempts following interference from Hogan on both occasions. On the September 15 edition of Impact Wrestling, Sting defeated long-time enemy Ric Flair to earn a match against Hogan at Bound for Glory. On the October 6 edition of Impact, Hogan agreed to give TNA back to Dixie Carter, should Sting win the match.

Robert Roode, winner of the Bound for Glory Series.

During June, the implementation of a three-month long points system tournament referred to as the "Bound for Glory Series" became the focal point in determining a number one contender for the TNA World Heavyweight Championship at Bound for Glory out of twelve top contenders. According to the rules, the wrestlers that accumulate the most points from every match held on Impact Wrestling, house shows, and on pay per views, the top four would face off in a matches at No Surrender, where the winner would gain the opportunity to challenge for the championship at their biggest annual spectacle.[7] In September, Bobby Roode, Bully Ray, Gunner and James Storm emerged as the top four contenders heading into No Surrender. At the PPV on September 11, Roode and Bully Ray finished tied in the top of the standings, after Roode defeated Gunner via submission and Bully Ray defeated Storm via disqualification. In an unadvertised match, Roode then defeated Bully Ray to become the number one contender to the TNA World Heavyweight Championship.

A.J. Styles versus Christopher Daniels was another feud heading into Bound for Glory. On the March 31 edition of Impact, Christopher Daniels returned saving Fortune from a beat down from Immortal. On April 17 at Lockdown, Christopher Daniels teamed with the rest of Fortune to defeat Immortal in a Lethal Lockdown match. On July 10 at Destination X, A.J. Styles defeated Christopher Daniels. Over the next several weeks, Christopher Daniels asked for a rematch. The match took place on the September 1 edition of Impact Wrestling, with Christopher Daniels picking up the win. After the match, Daniels refused to shake A.J.'s hand. On the September 22 edition of Impact Wrestling, Daniels kept goading A.J about his (Daniels) victory which eventually lead to a brawl between the two. It was finally broken up by Kazarian. Daniels then hit A.J. completing his heel turn. Two weeks later it was announced that, under Daniels' request, the two would face each other in an "I Quit match" at Bound for Glory.

Another feud heading into Bound for Glory was between Rob Van Dam and Jerry Lynn. On July 10 at Destination X, Rob Van Dam defeated Lynn. Over the next month, Lynn accompanied RVD in his matches. On August 8 at Hardcore Justice, RVD, ranked number two in the Bound for Glory series, faced Crimson, ranked number one. In the match, Lynn came in and attacked Crimson, causing RVD to lose by disqualification, costing him not only the match, but several spots in the tournament's standings. On the August 18 edition of impact, Lynn cost RVD a match against A.J. Styles in similar fashion. On the September 1 edition of impact, Lynn turned on RVD, costing him a match against Gunner, costing him the entire tournament. On the following Impact, Lynn explained his actions saying that he was sick of being in Van Dam's shadow.
