"Butta Bomma" (transl. Basket doll) is an Indian Telugu-language song by singer Armaan Malik and composed by S. Thaman from the 2020 soundtrack album Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo of the film of the same name. The song is written Ramajogayya Sastry.[1] The song's lyrical version was released on 23 December 2019, while the full video song was released on 21 February 2020 under the music label Aditya Music. The single is filmed at Annapurna Studios.
Release
The teaser of the song was scheduled to release on 18 December 2019,[2] but due to technical difficulties, it was released on 22 December.[3] The lyrical was released on 23 December 2019[4] and the full video was released on 21 February 2020.[5]
Music video
The music video features Allu Arjun and Pooja Hegde dancing for the single. The music is choreographed by Jani Master, a well-known choreographer from Tollywood.[6] The full video song was officially released on 21 February 2020 under Aditya Music label,[7] and garned lot of views due to its choreography and picturisation.[8]
Reception
Audience response
Upon the release of the full video version of the song, it gained lots of appreciation for its music and choreography.Jani Master, who choreographed the song received lots of praise for his work for the single.[9] On the other side, singer Armaan Malik also received appreciation.[10][11][12]
Butta Bomma became a viral hit across the Indian subcontinent and other parts of the world.[13][14] The song went on to become a massive hit on short-video making entertainment apps like TikTok,[12] ShareChat, and social media platforms.
Allu Arjun's rolling step in the music video became a signature step and was recreated by millions, in many short-video and social media platforms. Many celebraties in India and other countries across various fields too recreated the music video by dancing the signature step.[15][16][17][18][19][12][20] In August 2020, Marathi actor Pushkar Jog released his dance cover video of the song.[21]
Critical reviews
123telugu.com on reviewing the music of the soundtrack wrote that "The song has a special charm and Armaan Mallik makes it super special with his charming singing. The beat is Indian as Thaman has kept it simple and the tune takes over with the special lyrics by Ram Jogayya Sastry being a special bonus. This song too is an instant charmer and you will surely groove to it more once you see the super stylish visuals."[22]
IndiaGlitz.com stated that "Sastry's knack of writing alliterative lines and poetic thoughts comes to the fore in this delectably-written song. The phrase 'Kaali kindi puvvu nenu nethinettukuntive' is one of those story-based lines. Armaan Malik has an effervescent voice and when he rises the crescendo, he does sound a bit like Anurag Kulkarni did in 'Ramuloo Ramulaa'. Thaman is on a roll and he is not ready to take a break from giving blockbusters."[23]
Records and awards
"Butta Bomma" became the most-viewed Telugu song ever on YouTube with over 655 million views for full video version and more than 90 million views for its lyrical version. It topped the charts of the year in India and also one of the most viewed songs in India of all time.[24][25] It is the second most-viewed South Indian music video on YouTube, after Rowdy Baby. It has around 30 million streams on Spotify and is currently the most streamed Telugu song on the platform.[26]
The song has many plays on many music-streaming services, especially on Amazon Prime Music, Gaana, JioSaavn, etc.
Butta Bomma won the Mirchi Music Awards South for the most ‘Viral Song of the Decade’ in Telugu.[27]
Other versions
The song was later released as a single in Malayalam as "Kutti Bomma" on 6 January 2020, for the film's Malayalam version,[28] with lyrics written by B. K. Harinarayanan, and Srikrishna Vishnubhotla performing the song instead of Armaan Malik. On 16 November 2020, the Kannada version of the song is released as "Putta Bomme" with Deepak Subrahmanyam giving vocals to the song, and V.
