Criteria

[edit]

@Mais oui!:, thank you for creating this category. Do you think performers of stepdance, such as Michael Flatley and Jean Butler, as most professional Irish dancers are, should be added to this cat and Category:Performers of Irish dance? Triptothecottage (talk) 06:59, 4 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

If “Performers of Irish Dance” is synonymous with “Irish stepdancers” then it should be a subcategory of this cat. However, if it is significantly broader, then a new subcat would be necessary: Irish stepdancers.Mais oui! (talk) 07:04, 4 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Mais oui!: The problem is significantly broader in my opinion; Riverdance and shows of its ilk have blurred the boundaries between types of Irish dance considerably (though many of those boundaries were artificial distinctions to begin with). Not everything Flatley does in Riverdance is strictly stepdance, but at the same time, that style is certainly the predominating influence and conversely the style which has been influenced the most by his accomplishments. I feel that it would be too difficult to draw distinctions between stepdancers and professional Irish dancers. Triptothecottage (talk) 07:40, 4 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That is fine. These types of issues are very common in categorisation. The key thing is that articles and sub-cats should be included in parent cats when they reasonably would be expected to be there. “Double categorisation” is a very minor problem. Therefore, forget about an “Irish stepdancers” subcat, and we’ll just add “Performers of Irish dance” to this cat.Mais oui! (talk) 08:04, 4 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
