Naming conventions

This is a mess. I think some form of naming convention needs to be decided on for all lists of cities in this category. We've got good articles, but inconsistencies in how they are named. The following are merely examples of a much larger problem:

List of towns and cities with 100,000 or more inhabitants vs. List of towns and cities with 5,000,000+ inhabitants vs. List of cities in Japan over 50,000 population (2000 census) vs. List of cities in the United States with over 100,000 people. ("X or more inhabitants" vs. X+ inhabitants vs. "over X population" vs. "with over X people.")

If we ultimately go with the third or fourth, a sub-issue present is then "with over" vs simply "over."
Another issue here is "people" vs. "inhabitants." List of cities in the United States with over 100,000 people calls them people, but List of towns and cities with 100,000 or more inhabitants calls them "inhabitants."
Another issue exemplified here is listing census dates vs. not. List of cities in Italy over 20,000 population (2001 census), for example, includes it (as does the Japan list above).

List of the 20 largest metropolitan areas of Italy vs. List of cities by population, where the latter list is worldwide, but terminates at 50 and doesn't specify a set number. (I realize that this is metropolitan areas vs. cities, but it still seems inconsistent overall.)

Sidenote: On the same point, there's List of the 100 largest municipalities in Canada by population, which, like the worldwide list above, adds "by population," even though the other lists under this point are sorted by population. Then there's List of the largest metropolitan areas in the Americas, which again doesn't specify a number.

Under the subcategory for lists of cities in the U.S., List of cities in Nebraska vs. List of cities in Alaska, USA. Should we list the country, and if so, how should it be styled?

As you can see, these article titles are all over the place. I don't have a specific naming proposal, because I was hoping people would discuss this here and reach an agreement on how to name these articles... to me, it doesn't really matter to me what they are named, so long as it's consistent. I do intend on staying in this discussion, but for now, I just wanted to point out that it is an issue. --Czj 01:24, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
