Should this category list railways?

[edit]

There is a clear value to a navigational list of narrow gauge railways in Wales. I would suggest that this category should therefore list them, not merely become a supercategory for railways by gauge. Many readers may know the name of a line, but not its gauge. We should not let some dogmatic approach to categorization reduce the usefulness to readers. Andy Dingley (talk) 11:55, 10 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I would suggest that someone create a new article named either Narrow gauge railways in Wales or List of narrow gauge railways in Wales similar in format to the existing article List of narrow gauge railways in Ireland, and make that new article the key article for this category. Suitable content for the new article can be extracted from the tables in the existing article British narrow gauge railways. Bahnfrend (talk) 12:09, 10 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's a lot easier to do that through a category, than by creating a new list article. Andy Dingley (talk) 12:27, 10 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The past few weeks I created "narrow gauge railways in..." articles for almost every European country, like Narrow gauge railways in Germany (see the {Europe in topic|Narrow gauge railways in} template). Similar articles for Wales, England and Scotland are on my todo list. Any suggestions for this approach are welcome. --Aaron-Tripel (talk) 18:21, 11 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
We already had such a list, through the category. There's no need to expend effort on writing a new article. Andy Dingley (talk) 18:59, 11 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The former situation was that the "Narrow gauge Railways in Wales" category contained a flat list consisting of 50-65 railways without any properties like gauge, location, still in service or not, length, etc. Just a flat list isn't very useful in my opinion.
I looked further: We already have Great Little Trains of Wales, Narrow gauge slate railways in Wales and British narrow gauge railways. The last one does have a location column in its tables, but cannot be sorted on countries like Wales.
The same applies to British industrial narrow gauge railways, British quarrying and mining narrow gauge railways, British military narrow gauge railways and British private narrow gauge railways.
We could rework the these articles (columns) to address your concerns. --Aaron-Tripel (talk) 20:02, 11 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
