Cole World: The Sideline Story is the debut studio album by American rapper J. Cole. The album is scheduled to be released September 27, 2011 under Jay-Z's label Roc Nation with distribution from Sony Music.[1] The album is his first studio release, following three successful mixtapes. Production will be handled mainly by Cole himself, with some production from high-profile producers such as No I.D. and Danja. On May 3, 2011 J. Cole stated on Twitter "All singles done. Album ridiculous. Title Perfect. Music incredible. Thank you for your patience. Let's change the game."[2] On June 21, 2011 Cole tweeted, "Cole World: The Sideline Story", the album's title. He then tweeted "9/27," the release date.[3] Cole World: World Tour has been scheduled and will begin August 23rd in Vancouver.[4]

Background

J. Cole said several of the tracks are songs he's held onto from before he was signed. He said they were too good to give away on mixtapes.[5] J. Cole stated that he has 16 tracks on the album, 13 of which he has produced himself. He also revealed that he will not release a pre-album mixtape like he previously stated. Instead, every Sunday until the album he will release songs that did not make the album. The bundles of songs released are called Any Given Sundays.[6] J. Cole has said that the reason for the subtitle "The Sideline Story" is because he feels since being signed to Jay-Z it has been like being on the sidelines for your favorite basketball team, and you're just waiting until the coach puts you on.

Production

The album most likely will not have many features but production will include J. Cole himself, Danja, and No I.D.[7][8][9] J. Cole wants his fans to expect a different sound, while he speaks about topics that have never been included in mainstream hip hop music before. [1] The Source magazine said the Cole's "evolution as a producer solely enhances the product."[10] "Outside of co-production from Danja and No I.D., this album is all Cole at his rawest."[10]

Singles

The album's first promotional single was "Who Dat" which was released in June 08 of 2010, it was produced by Cole and Elite. The album's first single is "Work Out".[11] It samples "The New Workout Plan" by Kanye West and interpolates "Straight Up" by Paula Abdul. A music video for the song was released August 15th.[12] The second single will be "Can't Get Enough" featuring Trey Songz. The music video for the song will premiere the week of or week before the album release. It was shot in Barbados and Rihanna will be featured in a cameo.
