College of Electrical & Mechanical Engineering

College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering or (CEME) is the largest constituent college of National University of Sciences and Technology, Pakistan. The college is envisaged to grow as a modern center of excellence in various fields of sciences and technology whilst enabling provision of intellectual leadership and development of indigenous technology within Pakistan.

History

During the 1957 era the facilities in the school were constantly updated to keep pace with the quality and quantity of equipment being inducted in the Army. By 1969, the School had grown sufficiently in stature and expertise to be elevated to the status of College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.

Having established its credibility as a premier equipment-training institute, it started its own B.Sc. Engineering Program in 1981, which was subsequently shifted to Naval Engineering College, Karachi. In April 1984, having stayed for 26 years at Quetta, the college moved to its present premises. The same year the College revitalized its B.Sc. Engineering Program in affiliation with the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore.

The program was successful and its quality can be gauged from the fact that College graduates won laurels for the institution by winning Rhodes, Commonwealth and S & T Scholarships besides proving their mettle in defence and civil industry. This success prompted the start of M.Sc. program in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering from August 1988 for officers of Corps of Signals and EME. MSc engineering program were then extended to Pakistan Air Force, Navy and Civil organizations in 1989.

The academic program of the College was given a new dimension when it became a constituent college of National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) in 1993. The syllabi of was consequently updated and redesigned to fulfil the mission assigned to the college by NUST with the national requirements in perspective. The undergraduate and the postgraduate degrees were renamed as Bachelor of Engineering (BE) and Master of Science (MS) degrees respectively.

However the technological dictates of modern equipment necessitated the introduction of Computer Engineering as an additional discipline at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. The first undergraduate class was accordingly inducted in April 1996 and it was hoped that it will enable the College to train the much-needed manpower for the nation in this vital field of technology. A hope that was fulfilled when the first induced batch graduated in April 2000.

Today most of the research and production processes and production lines in the industry are of electromechanical nature. It is inevitable for people working on those process and production lines to have knowledge of all the related systems. Presently the employees get trained while doing on the job training and lack the requisite theoretical knowledge. The College realising this disparity between industrial requirements and the curriculum content ventured into introducing Mechatronics Engineering from January 1999 at the undergraduate level.

PhD program started in the discipline of Electrical, Mechanical and Computer engineering in the year 2001. In order to provide opportunity to those full-time working candidates who are eager to enhance their academic qualification, evening program in MS Software Engineering were initiated in 2001.

In year 2005, MS program in Microwave and Mechatronics engineering were started. In year 2006 MS/PhD in Engineering Management were Started and by the year 2007 the college reached unimaginable heights when NUST was established as one of the best universities in Pakistan by the HEC rankings. Moreover 2007 marked the 50th aniversary of the college and made it one of the oldest serving educational organizations in Pakistan.

As of 2008, the Electrical Engineering Department of the College has found accredition as the best in the country and one of the top most in the southeast Asia region. With tough competitive exams and selection criteria the students have lead to further enhancing the name of the college and university on the national and international fronts. The mechatronics department has gained fame through the annual all Pakistan robotics competition (NERC) which is one of the best in Asia. The computer and mechanical departments have gained wide publicity due to the quality of engineers they provide and also due to the large number of competitions that are held under their umbrella.

Furthermore the five decades of its history has lead to the college into providing quality education to civilian and future military students of Pakistan and playing a pivotal role in enhancing quality higher education within Pakistan.

Location

The present campus is located on Peshawar Road at a distance of 13 km from the heart of Rawalpindi and 15 km from the center of Islamabad. It spans an area of 124 acres with the college campus consisting of training blocks, living accommodation for students, faculty and staff, stadium, auditorium, gymnasium, mosque, post office, bank, grocery store and a welfare shop.

Within Rawalpindi the wagons / buses plying from Rawalpindi Saddar and from Pirwadhai Bus Stand to Taxila pass by the College and can be availed to reach the main college gate.

For those coming from other cities within Pakistan, traveling via railway is often a favorable choice although Daewoo Bus Service has also become a more viable option. International students may have to check the local listings for flight schedules from their respective countries to Benazir Bhutto International Airport ,Pakistan.

About the Department

The department imbues a life-long quest for inquiry, reasoned analysis and for creating solutions to address the requirements of pakistani society. The Department is currently staffed by mostly foreign-qualified faculty members who are PhD and Master-level qualified. This faculty offers the most dynamic, up-to-date and highly challenging academic programmes comparable to the best in any foreign institution.

Furthermore It entails a broad-based course of study covering Analogue and Digital Electronics, Embedded Systems, Microwave Engineering, Digital communication, Feed-back Control Systems and Digital signal processing. Moreover the graduates are very eagerly sought by the process-Control Industries, Telecom Service Providers and Research & Development Centres in Pakistan and abroad.

The post-graduate programs on the other hand offers courses in four specialties i.e. Control Systems, Digital Signal Processing, Communication Systems and Microwave Engineering. The department offers very conducive environments for R&D activities. A number of such projects, sponsored by the Government of Pakistan and Higher Education Commission (HEC) are currently in hand. This activity is constantly expanding and upgrading for future enhancements.

Departmental Distinctions

• The department has the unique distinction of having graduated the first indigenous Ph.D scholar of NUST in November, 2004.

• The undergraduate programs attracts the top-most students from all-over Pakistan.

• Microwave Engineering Research Lab is the only one if its kind in Pakistan.

The future

The Department has elaborate plans to introduce new undergraduate streams majoring in Electrical power generation & Distribution, Biomedical Engineering, Intelligent Systems, and Nano-Technologies. The Physical infrastructure, i.e. the Post-graduate Labs etc, will also be strengthened in due course.

CEME Library

The College Library is a fully computerized library that has been provided with excellent services and facilities to fulfill the information needs of faculty members as well as students. The library is equipped with state-of-the-art systems and technologies. It has a collection of over 70,000 volumes comprising of both printed and electronic information sources. Mangement of the library is done by a number of qualified and experienced staff who are dedicated in providing a high quality and innovative services.

The mission of the library is basically to excel in supporting the academic and scholarly endeavor of the users, in their core instructional and research requirements by utilizing the best possible resources, systems and services.

Thus one of the major aims of the library is to encourage and support the academic and research activities of E&ME college faculty, staff and students and the library fulfils this requirement by providing a full range of services that include loans, online information searching, reference services, inter-library loan, document delivery, photocopying, access to virtual collection & digital resources, CD-ROM.

About the Department

The department offers a broad spectrum of subjects covering major subjects such as programming, data structures, mathematics, logic design, computer architecture, operating systems, microprocessor-based design, software engineering, integrated circuits, signals and filters, computer networks, database engineering, computer graphics, communication systems, digital instrumentation, digital system design, digital image processing, artificial systems, digital signal processing, design project, control systems, electronics, network analysis, linear circuit analysis and computer-aided-drawing besides teaching eighteen courses of basic sciences & humanities.

The Department has its own powerful computer laboratories consisting of high performance Sun Workstations, Pentium computers and Tatung machines. College LAN consists of about 500 computers running under NOVELL, Window NT, Unix, Solaris and Java operating systems.

Moreover high degree of specialization coupled with dedicated teaching resources attracts a large number of students all over the country each year. Faculty remains at the forefront of new developments and innovation in emerging fields of information technology and computer engineering applications.

The graduates are well received by the industry and its allied sectors due to their sound professional knowledge and solution-oriented approach as they are able to make an effective contribution to the design, development and support of computer systems in a wide variety of applications.

• Historically a large proportion of graduates have secured a successful career within Pakistan and abroad due to the highest academic standard set by the faculty of the department compared to other degree awarding institutions in Pakistan.

Department of Mechatronics Engineering [DMTS]

Introduction

Considering the need of the time most of the state of the art industries in the world have changed from pure mechanical, manufacturing or process controlled to the ones where the processes are more of electromechanical, fully automated and mostly controlled by computers. To achieve the quality products even the most simple production lines and production processes in the industries have a blend of computers in them. It has become the requirement for people working on such processes and production lines to have knowledge of all the related systems.

The college of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, realizing this disparity between the concurrent industrial requirements and the knowledge imparted to the university graduates who are looking forward to join the system as practical engineers ventured into introducing Mechatronics Engineering from September 1998 at the undergraduate level.

Departmental Distinctions

• The Department of Mechatronics Engineering annually holds the National Engineering Robotics contest in which Universities from around Pakistan compete with their indigenous autonomous robots.

• Projects from the Mechatronics Department are widely acclaimed and have won numerous awards.

Student Societies

CEME students also take part in extracurricular activities such as managing academic conferences, hosting charity shows and debating events to relieve them of educational stress and pressures.

Furthermore the student societies, clubs, and associations help to meet the recreational and vocational needs of students, who also bring with them a rich blend of extracurricular interests from there pre-college ages.

Political Activities

Politics in the CEME are strictly forbidden and all students will give a written undertaking at the time of admission to ensure that they will abstain from any such activity during the tenure of their studies. It is furthermore clarified that the rector NUST has full authority to terminate the registration of any student when such an action is recommended by the college commandant.
