A Dog's Will 2.[1] (Portuguese: O Auto da Compadecida 2, literally "The Compassionate Woman's Play", the woman being the Virgin Mary) is an upcoming Brazilian comedy film, set to be released on December 25, 2024, based on the 1955 play Auto da Compadecida and other works by Brazilian playwright Ariano Suassuna. Directed by Guel Arraes, it is a sequel to the 2000 film[2][3]. The cast includes Matheus Nachtergaele, Selton Mello and Virginia Cavendish, reprising their roles from the first film, alongside Taís Araújo, Humberto Martins, Fabíula Nascimento, Juliano Cazarré, Enrique Díaz and Eduardo Sterblitch.[1]
Plot
[edit]The movie is set 25 years after the events of the first film. Upon his return to Taperoá, João Grilo (Nachtergaele) reunites with his friend Chicó (Mello), and discovers that he reached legend status in the region, after Chicó spent years telling their adventures and stories. Using his cunning, João Grilo will attempt to take advantage of his fame.[4]
Cast
[edit]- Matheus Nachtergaele como João Grilo[5]
- Selton Mello como Chicó[6]
- Virginia Cavendish como Rosinha[7]
- Taís Araújo como Our Lady of Aparecida[8]
- Eduardo Sterblitch como Arlindo[9]
- Humberto Martins como Coronel Ernani[10]
- Luís Miranda como Antônio do Amor
- Fabiula Nascimento como Clarabela Catacão
- Juliano Cazarré como Omar
- Enrique Díaz como Joaquim Brejeiro[11]
Production
[edit]The original play did not have a sequel. In order to stay within Ariano Suassuna's universe, other works by the author, such as A Farsa da Boa Preguiça (lit. "the good sloth farce"), served as basis for the screenplay.
Although there was an expectation that filming would happen in Cabaceiras, Paraíba, location of the first film, the movie was shot entirely in studio, where Suassuna's Taperoá was recreated.[12]
Filming was finished in October 2023, and is set to be released on December 25, 2024.[13]
The first teaser was released on May 2, 2024[14]
