Conquer The Ninja World is an ongoing fictional series written by Japanese-American author Akito B. Takahashi. The novels, set in a fantasy world about ninjas, chronicles the life of a character named Jonathan Yuan who is bent on escaping.[1]
The series was self-published by Akito B. Takahashi in the United States. Consisting of different genres, including thriller, fantasy, literary fiction, and religious, Jonathan Yuan (an average young adult) finds himself in the fictional world of "Neo", created by a famous writer on earth. He was once an avid reader and follower of Neo's franchise, but has long since abandoned it entirely. Now, with the resolve to escape by whatever means necessary, he utilizes all his past knowledge to become an apex predator.[2]
Plot
[edit]Part I
[edit]The story takes place with the main character, Jonathan Yuan, already waking up in Neo's fictional world, the ninja world. Believing things to be a dream, he ventures off to discover the environment. Jonathan later discovers that he's not dreaming and quickly comes to terms with his mysterious predicament. Because this world utilizes a spiritual substance called "energy” in combat, he immediately abandons the area where the world's main story takes place in order to harness his energy. It doesn't take long for him to determine that he not only has a low aptitude to become a ninja, but he also decides that it is better to destroy this world than accept his fate.[3]
Using his memories that were taken with him from earth, he takes advantage of his younger, more athletic body to gain other ninjas' loyalty. In doing so, he manages to masquerade as an innocent child not seeking to harm others. It's not until he discovers that the true main character of this world (Neo) is going to be born soon. Knowing that he needs to get stronger quickly, he takes the chance of returning to the place where Neo will be born. Jonathan soon manages to use his wits and subdue a kunoichi while the main sect is being terrorized by a “youkai”. In doing so, he acquires his first "ancestral blood" which allows him to manipulate others through hypnotism. But little did he know, he slew an important character that would affect Neo's story.
Using this newly acquired ancestral blood, he places the main character's favourite restaurant owner (Asahikawa) under a trance. This same hypnotic suggestion allowed him to act as a secret family member of the Asahikawa household without anyone else knowing. And because Asahikawa has a daughter, he decides to place her under a hypnotic trance as well. Jonathan then continues to use his vast knowledge of this world to invest in businesses that he knows will make him rich beyond measure. While playing the role of a businessman, he covertly infiltrates the sect in order to acquire more skills, techniques, and another ancestral blood.

Characters
[edit]- Jonathan Yuan, modeled after an array of perfectionists, such as Patrick Bateman, grew up on earth as an avid follower of the Neo franchise. After abandoning the franchise to focus on more sociable things, he would later learn how to fit in with any crowd and win anyone's heart. That sense of charisma is also how he's able to manipulate others without being manipulated himself. And though he is sometimes called psychotic by critics, he always remains calm and collective.
- Neo Genesis, the main character in the world of ninjas, is written to grow up to becoming the strongest ninja. He doesn't take his career as a ninja seriously until later in the series.
- Izarra Archon is a character that wasn't heavily expanded upon during the world's creation. Written to have been a happy, carefree kunoichi within the sect, Jonathan's arrival changed her personality to that of a more cold, closed-off individual.
Development
[edit]Takahashi has explained rigorously through his novels that his idea is original and that his sole purpose for creating the series was to both entertain and teach potential readers. His character, Jonathan Yuan, is modeled after Yuan Shikai due to Takahashi's obsession with the Edwardian era. Takahashi also explains:
As a Christian, I understand that Jonathan's acts seem a tad immoral. However, he does not view the people of this world as "people". To him, it's almost like he's in hell, so he tries really hard to tread lightly. Yes, he still abides by his faith, but he's not opposed to slaying other characters, regardless of how real they may seem.[5]
Themes
[edit]Conquer The Ninja World's overarching theme is survival.[6] In the first book, when Jonathan first arrives in Neo's world, he feels "livid" at the idea that he was taken away from his loved ones on earth. Other characters that interact with Jonathan's ventures perceive that he's always cautious about everything. Unsure of whether he's died or not, he vows to live on in this "godforsaken world" by any means necessary.
The series has an existential perspective as Jonathan goes through relentless trials to preserve his life. In the world of ninjas, surviving is a key feat that all growing characters must learn. Unlike Neo, who is the main character and has the entire world revolving around him, Jonathan is an unregistered character with no apparent background.[7]
Roles distinguish Jonathan and Neo. Jonathan is a sophisticated individual who will do whatever it takes to reach his goals. While Neo, who has yet to be born, was written to have become the strongest ninja with almost every power gifted to him since birth.
Takahashi drew on the United States' and China's military systems as a source of inspiration, which allowed him to build the world of ninjas with superpowers. Attracted to filler characters, Takahashi makes use of them through his main character. Filler characters are hardly ever expanded upon in stories, so Jonathan (who was once in love with Neo's world) was not willing to let them go to aid in his survival. After he slays a filler character, they are often forgotten about by Neo's main cast and don't obstruct how Neo's personal story unfolds.
Due to Takahashi's Christian background, he has explicitly stated that the series does not contain any sex scenes. And because of Jonathan's willingness to survive, he does not undergo any romantic relationships that would otherwise jeopardize his beliefs. This non-existence concept of promiscuity allowed Takahashi to expand more on what it means to feel alive. As such, Jonathan experiences things like he would on earth: thirst, hunger, tiredness, and even dreams—all for the sake of remembering that he is indeed still alive.
