Hayman Homer (Kurdish: هەیمەن هۆمەر) is an American actor, model, film producer, and activist of Kurdish descent[1][2][3][4].

He is most noted for his leading role performances as Jesus Christ in the 2024 epic historical film The Messiah, which screened at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C., the biggest bible museum in the world. He is recognized as the first Kurd to take on this iconic character[2]. He also stars as a war medic in the 2024 war drama short film Aman[2].

Biography

Hayman hails from a Kurdish family, his heritage traces back to the Soran Emirate. He was born in Erbil[5], an ancient city immersed in urban history and culture. Upon finishing high school, he lived in various countries such as Kurdistan, Greece, Italy, France, and England. His father, Homer Eli, was an intelligence operative with the Kurdish Peshmerga from the 1970s to the 1990s against the former Iraqi regime, later became a prisoner of war and gave his life for the Kurdish independence movement[1][2][6][7]. After the loss of his father at the age of 10, he was raised by his single mother, Bediah Azeez, alongside his seven siblings - five brothers and two sisters[8].

Hayman moved to the United States in 2017[9][10] and first settled in Nashville, Tennessee[5][1]

Early life and education

Hayman received a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and international relations from Salahaddin University[11][12]. Hayman's passion for cinema led him to pursue further studies in acting and film at the 4th Wall Acting Studio and the Nashville Acting Studio in Nashville, Tennessee[2].

The inspiration for his cinematic journey was ignited by films such as Goodfellas (1990), directed by Martin Scorsese, and What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) starring Johnny Depp[2].

One of the films that most impacted Hayman's life was Yol (The Road), a 1981 political thriller and the winner of the Palm d'Or, at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival. Written and directed by Kurdish filmmaker Yilmaz Gunay[2].

2018-2022: Early work

Hayman started as a model and appeared as the face of ‘The Escape Game’ commercial in 2018 which put his face on billboards in major malls across America[9][4]. He was cast in multiple country and Hollywood music videos, before transitioning to film[9][13].

Hayman’s leading role movie began with the portrayal of Jesus Christ[14] in ‘The Messiah’. Principal filming began on December 2023 in Columbia, Tennessee with JMC Studios [12].

Hayman wrapped up shooting Aman, his second war drama short film in Adairsville, Georgia On November 2023. His latest commercial work, with Philip Morris International in Los Angeles, California,will be distributed throughout Europe and the Middle East. Hayman attended The 77th annual 2024 Cannes Film Festival and the 74th Berlin International Film Festival[13].

Activism

Off screen, Hayman is a human rights advocate, community activist, and board member of the Tennessee Kurdish Community Council and the Kurdistani Diaspora Confederation in his hometown of Nashville, Tennessee[4][15][16], which works to promote principles of democracy, peace, coexistence, and community cooperation[12]. Dedicated to supporting underserved minority communities and displaced people from other countries, their continued welfare, education and economy. Hayman participated in the signing of the sister-city pact[17], a commercial and diplomatic agreement between the governments of his American hometown of Nashville and his birth city of Erbil, in an official ceremony held in Nashville by the Mayor of Nashville, John Cooper, and the Governor of Erbil, Omed Khoshnaw,on September 9, 2023[17].
