Future
[edit]Guns III - Alias: Billy the Kid (TBA)
[edit]In January 2021, it was announced that a third film was in development. John Fusco will return as a screenwriter, with the working title being revealed with a mockup poster as being "Guns III - Alias: Billy the Kid". Fusco revealed that Emilio Estevez, Lou Diamond Phillips, Kiefer Sutherland, and Christian Slater will return to their respective roles while stating that Vincent D'Onofrio, Harry Knowles, Chris Pratt, and Warren G will appear in the supporting cast.[1][2]
In March of the same year, Phillips confirmed that he intends to reprise his role from the first two movies, stating that Estevez was still working on the script with Fusco at that point.[3] The actor stated that early negotiations for his return to the film series began a year previous in 2020 when he first read the script that Estevez had written; after which the latter presented his draft to Fusco who would be hired as screenwriter.[4][5] Estevez later also officially confirmed his involvement with the project, stating that he has wanted to revisit the franchise for a number of years.[6]
By January 2023, the film had officially entered pre-production.[7] In April of the same year, Estevez confirmed that they intend to drop the "Young" portion of the title for the next movie due to the years that have passed while stating that the story is completed, though the script is still being written.[8][9] In May 2023, Phillips stated that development on the project is ongoing,[10] while Estevez stated that once distribution rights are determined production will commence; citing the resurgence of successful western movies as an influence on the project.[11] In July 2024, Phillips confirmed that though the production on the sequel hasn't commenced, development continues behind the scenes. Announcing that Estevez will also serve as director, the actor stated that the filmmaker was in the process of scouting locations before Morgan Creek through their actions further complicated the rights to the movie.[12]
Other potential projects
[edit]In April 2023, Estevez stated that there are ongoing conversations for potential for additional sequels; exploring the life events of William "Brushy Bill" Roberts, who had claimed to be the real-life Billy William "the Kid" Bonney. The star expressed interest in seeing that additional movies could explore the events of the life of Roberts, as the further adventures of Billy the Kid. He said that he believes films can be explored leading up to 1950, with character's time with Theodore Roosevelt in the Rough Riders during the Battle of San Juan Hill, and his time with Pancho Villa during the Mexican Revolution.[8][9] The next month, the actor stated that there may be two additional sequels following the release of Guns III.[11]
