Decimation is the name of the Marvel Comics crossover spinning out of the House of M miniseries. It takes place after events the House of M miniseries, where the Scarlet Witch's reality-warping abilities have stripped over 99% of the mutant population of powers, reducing a society of millions to one of scant hundreds. It heralds the upcoming relaunch of New Excalibur -- which will likely begin with Pete Wisdom looking for Captain Britain -- as well as that of X-Factor. Decimation begins with several mini-series - Son of M, Generation M, Sentinel Squad O*N*E, X-Men: Deadly Genesis, and X-Men: The 198 - and continues throughout the Marvel Universe, particularly in the X-Men related titles.

This event, the day when virtually all the world's mutants lost their abilities, is known as "M-Day" in the Marvel Universe.

One unfortunate consequence is an upswing of anti-mutant sentiment, especially among certain religious groups, who consider M-Day to be a God's judgement against mutantkind.

Depowered Mutants

NB: While Wizard Magazine published a list of supposedly-decimated characters, it has been confirmed by Marvel sources that the list includes mutants who still have their powers [1], and also includes non-mutant characters. This list therefore should not be trusted.

Relations

It has been noticed that a recurring trend in mutants who keep/lose their powers is family - Magneto, Quicksilver, and Polaris all lost their powers, while Cannonball, Husk, and Icarus (all siblings) kept their powers, except for Aero[Melody Guthrie]. There are a few exceptions to this, however: Nocturne, an alternate daughter of the Scarlet Witch, still has her powers, and Tito Bohusk is the only one of his family to retain his powers. Whether this is significant or not has yet to be revealed.
