He stated in 2004 during a visit to Georgia that his family migrated to Rize from Batumi after it's annexation by the Russians in the 19th century. However it is unclear weather his ancestors where Georgians or Turks from Georgia. Even if they were Georgian it hardly makes him a Georgian since 150 years is a long time.
