Golden Kamuy (ゴールデンカムイ, Gōruden Kamui) a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Satoru Noda. The Ainu language in the story is supervised by Yū Nakagawa, an Ainu language linguist. The manga won the 9th Manga Taishō award.

Plot

Saichi Sugimoto who survived the battle of 203 Hill in Russo-Japanese War was mining placer in Hokkaido to save his dead friend's wife. He heard a dubious story of hidden Ainu gold (800,000,000 JPY / 6,636,000 USD) and found its clue accidentally. Although he was attacked by 7th Division of the Imperial Japanese Army and other mysterious groups, he decides to search for the hidden Ainu gold along with an Ainu girl Ashiripa who saved him.

Characters

Saichi Sugimoto (杉元 佐一, Sugimoto Saichi)
A demobilized soldier who survived Russo-Japanese War in 1904. He served 1st Division of Imperial Japanese Army and fought the battle of 203 Hill. He was afraid of his savage fighting style and amazing toughness in the battle field, and known as "Immortal Sugimoto" (Fujimi no Sugimoto). He decides to make money to save his KIA friend Toraji's wife.
Ashiripa (アシリパ, Ashiripa)
An Ainu girl who was searching for a murderer who murdered his father. She saved Sugimoto from a wild bear accidentally and she decides to cooperate with him because his father was a victim of the hidden Ainu gold.
Nopperabou (のっぺら坊, Nopperabou) (No face)
A prisoner who murdered Ainu people who knows Gold and hided it. He painted partial map on 24 prisoners' backs as tattoo. He is known as "No Face".
Lieutenant Tsurumi (鶴見中尉, Tsurumi Chūi)
A career officer in 7th Division of Imperial Japanese Army who searches the Ainu hidden gold to separate Hokkaido from Japan as the independent country. His upper face is covered with metal plate because his head was blown up by artillery bombardment during Russo-Japanese War. He has strong hate against Japanese government because it did not get anything from Russia after the war and abandoned soldiers in the battle field.
Toshizō Hijikata (土方 歳三, Hijikata Toshizō)
A former samurai who fought against Japanese government. He escaped from prison with 24 prisoners who have map tattoos on their backs. He formed a group to search for the Ainu hidden gold. He is the real person.

Reception

Golden Kamuy won the 9th Manga Taishō award.[1] It was also nominated for the 20th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize[2] and the 40th Kodansha Manga Award in the general category.[3] The manga was ranked second in the 2016 edition of the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! list for male readers.[4] Golden Kamuy charted on the Oricon Japanese Comics Rankings for the week of April 18–24, 2016, with volume seven placing eighth place.[5]
