Good Morning Britain (GMB) is a breakfast programme on British television network ITV, broadcast weekdays from 6:00am to 8:30am. Good Morning Britain was launched on 28 April 2014 in place of Daybreak, ITV's previous breakfast programme that had experienced poor press and low viewing figures during its four-year run.[4] Although the ratings have been up and down since the programmes launch, since Piers Morgan has joined the presenting line up, the ratings have increased to over 700,000 daily average. On 3rd March 2016, Good Morning Britain peaked at 1 million viewers.

Format

Good Morning Britain consists of national and international news, weather, human interest features, entertainment stories and sports headlines. The programme features a roundup of news headlines every 30 minutes in addition to regional news bulletins at 06:10, 07:10 and 08:10. Entertainment news stories are featured at 06:50, 07:50 and heavily between 08:00-08:30. Studio guests such as politicians appear throughout, with celebrity guest interviews at 8:25am.

Special editions

The programme has been extended out of its time slot to cover major news stories: on 19 September 2014 to cover the Scottish independence referendum result until 10am, presented by Ben Shephard and Susanna Reid from Edinburgh as Scotland Decides; and on 8 May 2015 to provide coverage of the 2015 General Election until 9:25am, presented in the studio by Susanna Reid with Ben Shephard until 06:50 then Susanna Reid with ITV News at Ten newscaster Tom Bradby until the end of the programme.

On 2 December 2014, Phillip Schofield co-hosted Good Morning Britain as part of a 24-hour TV presenting challenge for Text Santa.

On 24 July 2015, most of Good Morning Britain was presented from inside Buckingham Palace by Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway whilst Laura Tobin presented the weather from the palace gardens. On 9 September 2015, Susanna Reid presented from outside Buckingham Palace to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II becoming the longest reigning monarch.

On 16 November 2015, Susanna Reid presented the majority of the programme live from Paris in the wake of the Paris Attacks the Friday prior. Charlotte Hawkins and Kate Garraway presented other news stories from the studio.

Reception

The programme has received mixed reactions. Positive reviews favoured Good Morning Britain's news content and fast-paced format,[7] while critics lambasted the programme's US-style presentation and "formed chemistry" of its presenters.[7]

The launch edition was watched by 0.8m viewers. By May 2014, ratings had averaged around 0.5m (14.4% audience share) in comparison to BBC Breakfast's 1.5m (37.2%).[8][9]

Tabloid rumours circulated in June 2014 that Good Morning Britain was facing cancellation after averaging an audience share of 13% less than its predecessor Daybreak a year previously.[10] ITV's director of programmes Peter Fincham later denied the rumours.[11]

Awards and nominations

Good Morning Britain was nominated for three TRIC Awards in 2015. Susanna Reid won Newscaster of the Year during the awards ceremony.[12]

"Newscast Studio" named the programme's set as Best International Set of the Year 2015.[13]
