Qualification for the men's tournament at the 2014 Winter Olympics will be determined by the IIHF World Ranking following the 2012 Men's World Ice Hockey Championships. The top nine teams in the world ranking will receive automatic berths into the Olympics, while all other teams will have an opportunity to qualify for the remaining three spots in the Olympics. As with Canada in 2010, the IIHF made no mention of direct qualification for the host.[1]

Direct Qualification

To qualify directly, a nation must be ranked in the top nine following the 2012 Men's World Ice Hockey Championships.[2] Using the IIHF World Ranking points system, the current year receives full value, and each preceding year is worth 25% less.[3] The following is a ranking based on points already accumulated toward Olympic qualification of all countries at the top level, or who are ranked amongst them. Actual world ranking may differ until after the 2012 tournament.

  • Nations ranked outside the top 27 participants wishing to qualify may have to play in an additional round to fill the final three spots in this round.[5] At this time 33 nations have registered, in 2010 the bottom four nations played off for the 30th spot. If the same procedure is used,  Croatia,  Serbia,  Mexico, and  Israel, would have to participate in a preliminary round. However, if a different format is used,  South Korea (28th) and  Spain (29th) may have to qualify for this round as well.
  • If a nation declines to participate the nations ranked below move up a spot to fill the vacancy. For example, in 2010 when China (28th) did not participate, both Great Briain (29th) and Serbia (30th) moved up one position.

Final qualification tournaments

Three round robins will be played from 7–10 February 2013. The hosts will be Nations ranked 10th, 11th and 12th following the 2012 World Championship. The three group winners will qualify for the Olympic tournament.
