Iziaslav (Template:Lang-uk IPA: [iˈzʲɑslɑw]) or Zaslav (Template:Lang-uk, IPA: [ˈzɑslɑw]) is one of the oldest cities in Volhynia. Situated on the Horyn river (Template:Lang-uk) in western Ukraine, the city dates back to the 11th century.[2]
History
19th century
Izyaslav was part of the Russian Empire - Volhynian Governorate.
20th century
At the beginning of World War II, the town had an important Jewish population representing 28% of the total inhabitants.[3] As soon as the Germans occupied the town, Jews were kept imprisoned in a ghetto. Jews were later murdered in mass executions perpetrated by an Einsatzgruppen.[4]
